Hillsboro to pay tribute to local veterans

As the nation commemorates the 70th anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor, the city of Hillsboro will pay tribute to the local men and woman who have defended the nation, and honor the sacrifices that have been made for the country's freedom.
Hillsboro Mayor Dick Zink has organized a recognition service for veterans, which will take place Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. at Hillsboro High School.
The service will begin with the presentation of the flag, and a prayer led by Hillsboro VFW Post 9094 Chaplain Gary Conley. The Hillsboro High School band and VFW Auxiliary member Alberta Duncan will perform "The Star-Spangled Banner."
Zink said that a representative from Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine's office, and a representative from the Ohio Department of Veterans Services are scheduled to be in attendance.
"We may have 10 people, we may have 100, but the invitation is out there," Zink said.
Veterans in attendance will be recognized with the playing of the songs for each branch of the armed forces.
"We'll have a reading of the names of those who didn't make it back," Zink said.
The list includes 132 names, from World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War, to PFC Zachary Gullett, who died in 2007 while serving in Iraq.
The service will conclude with Duncan playing, "Taps," and a prayer.
"I hope the service does what it's meant to do," Zink said.
Previously, Zink has said, "We have Veterans Day and Memorial Day and other celebrations, but I want to give them the opportunity to stand up and be recognized for the service they have given to our country. I would like to just be able to say 'thank you' and let them know we appreciate what they have sacrificed, and I think that other residents of Hillsboro probably would like to say the same thing."[[In-content Ad]]
