Highland District Hospital is proud to announce the return of full-time pulmonology medical services to its campus with the addition of Dr. Sandeep Kapur, a board-certified pulmonologist and critical care physician. Starting in June 2025, Dr. Kapur will offer care five days a week in the hospital’s Outpatient Specialty Services Clinic, marking a significant expansion in access to specialized respiratory care for the region.

Pulmonology at HDH will focus on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases affecting the lungs, airways, and diaphragm. Services will include both outpatient and inpatient consultation, as well as diagnostic testing such as Pulmonary Function Tests and Bronchoscopies.

“It is very rare for a rural hospital to have this type of care available five days a week,” said Tim Parry, President and CEO of Highland District Hospital. “This meets a huge community need.”

Respiratory diseases are increasingly prevalent in the United States. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, over 25 million Americans live with asthma, and more than 16 million with COPD. Other common respiratory conditions include emphysema, lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, and sleep apnea—all of which Dr. Kapur will be treating at HDH.

“We are nothing without our breath,” said Dr. Kapur. “When breathing is compromised, every system in the body is affected. Pulmonology requires a collaborative approach—working with physicians, nurses, and specialists to provide the best outcomes for our patients.”

Dr. Kapur brings extensive expertise to the role. He completed medical training at the University College of Medical Sciences & Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Delhi, India, with a specialization in tuberculosis and respiratory diseases at Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute. He later completed residency and fellowship training in internal medicine, pulmonary, and critical care at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. Most recently, he served patients in Middletown, Ohio, with Mercy Health Physicians.

Dr. Sandeep Kapur will treat a wide range of pulmonary and respiratory conditions, including COPD and emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma and allergies, lung nodules and lung cancer, sleep apnea, pneumonia and pulmonary infections, pleural disease, and respiratory failure.

“Patients will no longer need to travel outside our county for this level of care,” said Dr. Anthony Wetherington, Hospitalist and Vice Chief of Staff. “Our providers are thrilled to have a colleague to help better manage patients’ pulmonary needs right here at home.”

Physician referrals are required for pulmonology services. To learn more or to refer a patient, please call 937.393.5980 or visit www.hdh.org.

As a nurse having had the privilege of working with Dr. Kapur in the past, I'm so pleased to hear that the patients and staff of Highland District Hospital will be benefiting from his expertise and compassion. Dr. Kapur is easily the most impressive physician I've worked with in my 39 years of nursing. Congratulations, Highland District!
