Highland District Hospital installs new computer system

Highland District Hospital is pleased to announce the purchase and current implementation of the CPSI Healthcare Information System. According to Jim Baer, HDH President, “with this computer system, Highland District Hospital will be integrating our clinical departments to bring together patient data in a way that will allow the hospital to achieve greater efficiencies in operations as well as providing a higher level of patient care to the community.”

The system is being implemented in two phases. The first phase will include changing our current financial system to a system that will connect clinical departments to the hospital billing system. Efficiencies will be realized in the processing to allow timely completion and submission of insurance claims.   This will in turn mean quicker reimbursements.  Efficiencies in our financial operations will make a stronger hospital and allow us to continue to bring high quality healthcare services to the community.

The second phase of the system will tie together areas such as nursing, laboratory, radiology, and the pharmacy.  The system includes integrated patient safety features to help ensure that medications, tests and therapies are not duplicated or cause an unintended reaction, according to Tim Parry, Vice President of Nursing. Patient information in electronic format will result in an electronic medical record (EMR) that can be shared simultaneously throughout the hospital.

Real-time patient care information, available to caregivers regardless as to whether the caregiver is in the hospital, at the doctor’s office, or at home on-call, will reduce the hospital’s dependence on paper records and hand written notes.  An on-line electronic medical record will allow quicker, more informed care decisions based upon up to the minute information.  The second phase is planned for installation in May 2010.

Highland District Hospital is excited to implement this new technology, as we continually improve the overall healthcare experience for those we serve.
