Highland County man killed in ATV crash

An ATV crash Sunday along Paint Creek on Ohio 772 claimed the life of a Highland County man, according to a report from the Chillicothe Gazette.

"Ricky Washburn (28) of 7070 Cave Road, was pronounced dead at Adena Regional Medical Center after the crash, which occurred in 11000 block of Ohio 772 at about 5:53 p.m. Sunday," the newspaper reported. "According to a crash report from the Ross County Sheriff's Office, Washburn was trapped inside a 2010 Polaris Razor when it struck a tree. The Razor was driven by 29-year-old Eric Bethel, of 401 S. McArthur St., Chillicothe. Washburn was riding in the front passenger seat. Both were wearing safety belts, the report reads."

Ross County Sheriff George Lavender told The Highland County Press that the department had received several reports that Bethel and Washburn allegedly were trespassing in the ATV on private property.

"The Razor was driven through (a) creek and water splashed up on the windshield, distorting the driver's visibility," Lavender said.

The vehicle was then struck by several limbs and "one of the limbs went into the victim," pinning him inside the vehicle, Lavender said.

Washburn was transported to Adena Area Medical Center where he was
pronounced dead, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies from the Ross County Sheriff's Office and the Ross County Coroner are investigating the incident.

Lavender said there will "probably be some type of charge," in relation to the alleged trespassing, and it had not yet been determined if charges would be filed in relation to the crash.

Based on the investigation, the Chillicothe law director's office will determine what charges, if any, will be filed, Lavender said.
