Highland County Democrat Party on the move; upcoming events announced

It’s a busy time for the Highland County Democrat Party. We have several upcoming events and hope you will join us for any or all of them. First, we want to remind you of the reception to honor our retiring chairperson, Dinah Phillips. Join us on Sunday, July 19 from 2-4 p.m. at the Hi-TEC Center, 1575 N. High St., Hillsboro.

Dinah has served our party and our community for many years. While she will continue to be involved with all events and planning, we want to honor her for her remarkable career.

Next up will be our annual picnic on Aug. 2 from 3:30-6 p.m. at the Hi-TEC Center. A free dinner of pulled pork, baked beans, slaw and a variety of desserts will be served. We will feature candidates for local, state and national office as well as our a current Ohio Supreme Court Justice.

Don Leonard, candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in District 15, will share his campaign for common sense leadership. His vision is “an economy where every full-time job supports a full life, whether it is in food services or investment banking.”

Candidate Leonard states that “while corporations and billionaires get trade deals, government bailouts and tax breaks, Ohio’s safety nets and public schools are gutted in the name of deficit reduction. Meanwhile, more folks are forced to take on second jobs, extra shifts and credit card debt just to make ends meet. That isn’t how it is supposed to work.” Come and learn first-hand about Don and how he will represent us in
Washington.

Jennifer Brunner, Ohio Supreme Court justice, will also be our featured speaker. Justice Brunner serves as one of seven justices of the Ohio Supreme Court. She was elected in 2020 and began her term Jan. 2, 2021. 

She served as Ohio’s first female secretary of state from 2007-11, overseeing the first election of President Barack Obama in 2008. In 2008, then-Secretary Brunner received the bipartisan John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for her public service. The award recognizes “a public official (or officials) at the federal, state, or local level whose actions demonstrate the qualities of politically courageous leadership.” Justice Brunner is committed to providing fairness, equality and respect for all Ohioans and persons who come before the state’s highest court. 

As a justice, she pledges to be fair, impartial, independent, kind, and conscientious in fulfilling her oath as a constitutional officer of the state of Ohio. We are excited to hear from such an accomplished leader.

Other candidates confirmed to be present include Amy Wright, candidate for Ohio House, District 19; Brian Deer, Candidate for Ohio Senate, District 17, and Howard Zody, candidate for Highland County commissioner.
