Highland-134 Bridge, Culvert Replacement Set To Begin Next Week
CHILLICOTHE – Setting the wheels in motion and accelerating the contract award process, the Ohio Department of Transportation and its contractors are ready to start a culvert replacement project on state Route 134 in Highland County, where the route has been closed since mid-May.
“With ODOT’s Office of Contracts and the contractors, we are working to expedite the start of this project, and we are pleased that construction will begin next week,” said ODOT District 9 Deputy Director James A. Brushart.
On Monday, June 14, contractors will move on site to begin replacing the culvert, which is located at the 8.39-mile marker north of Buford, with a precast concrete box structure. As part of the plans for this project, the route will remain closed during construction, and traffic will continue to be detoured via state routes 131 and 138.
Although the project was already programmed to take place during this year’s construction season, crews from ODOT’s Highland County Highway Maintenance Facility were forced to close S.R. 134 just south of S.R. 131 after flash flooding last month caused the culvert to collapse and the pavement to be undermined.
Following a thorough investigation of the site, it was determined the route should remain closed during the interim and until such time that the culvert replacement project could be completed.
“Safety is our priority, and keeping the route closed since the culvert failure has been in the best interest of the traveling public,” added Brushart.
Bid letting for the project was held Thursday, May 27, and BCC Ohio, Inc., of New London, Ohio, was awarded a contract in the amount of $170,618 to replace the structure. The scheduled completion date for all work is September 15, 2010.
