Greenfield schools honors scholar, athletes

The Greenfield Exempted Village Schools Board of Education honored scholars and athletes Monday for achievements and honors made on the playing field, and in the classroom.
Senior Sam Henry was honored Monday by the board of education for being named a National Merit Scholar.
Henry is a member of the McClain boys SCOL championship soccer team, which was also honored Monday.
"Sam represents us as an athlete and as a scholar," said Superintendent Terry Fouch. "He has excelled not only on the field, but in the classroom."
According to the scholarship's website, "About 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high schools entered the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2010 Preliminary sat/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (psat/nmsqt®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors."
The National Merit scholars are selected, "on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies."
Fouch told the group of parents, students and coaches, "We would like to use Sam as an example in and outside of the classroom."
Board members Sandy Free and Danny Long presented Henry with a certificate honoring his achievement.
The board also recognized the boys soccer team, which recently one their third straight SCOL championship.
"This is a three-peat championship, and for many years, McClain soccer has been a force to be reckoned with," Fouch said. "Three consecutive championships set the bar really high for the future of the soccer program.
McClain boys soccer team members include Nic Rivas, Luis Rivas, Chris Parker, Trey Lytle, Sam Henry, Robbie Free, Jimmy Free, Trevor Figgins, Ben Chamblin, Ryan Case, Jarred White, Caleb Savage, Kaleb Osceola, Kieran O'Hearn, Lincoln O'Connor, Zack Harper, Reid Garrison, assistant coach Jon Chamblin and head coach Shawn Jackson.
The board honored the team with certificates.
"(Three championships) is pretty awesome, and you are to be congratulated," Fouch said.
The McClain girls golf team was also recognized by the board and honored with certificates for their winning the SCOL championship.
McClain girls golf team members include Shania Massie, Savannah Olaker, Taylor Rogers, Kaylee Smith, Brittany Massie, Morgan Dettwiller, Sarah Bickey, Shelby Dodds, and Coach Tracey Cokonougher, and Mindy Hunter.
"We're honoring two groups who have represented McClain High School extremely well on the athletic field," Fouch said.
Fouch said that in additional to the girls' athletic ability, "I have heard comments from other coaches about what nice and police athletes the girls from Greenfield are. We appreciate you representing us."
