A Greenfield man, Nathan Murray, 20, faces charges of importuning, a felony of the third degree, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia after an investigation by the Greenfield Police Department.

According to a news relewase from GPD Chief Tim Hester, on Feb. 15, the Greenfield Police Department was notified by the parents of an 11-year-old to report that the child had been contacted over the Internet by an adult male, seeking sexual contact.

During the investigation, officers gained access to a social networking account the child had been using. While posing as the child, officers engaged in a conversation with Murray.

A meeting place was arranged outside of a local store on Saturday evening, and when Murray showed up, he was taken into custody. Upon being arrested, Murray was found to be in possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and a replica .22 caliber revolver, the GPD said.

Murray is being held in lieu of $11,000 bond in the Highland County Justice Center and will appear for arraignment in Highland County Court on Monday, Feb. 22.

Additional charges may be filed after the case is reviewed by the prosecuting attorney.

"I want to commend the parents of this child for taking an active role in their child's Internet use," Hester said. "This case highlights the need for parents to be involved in their children's online activity. Parents need to monitor Internet acitivity. This came about through a social networking Web site."

Hester encourages parents to use software that restricts and/or monitors certain Web sites.

"Some of these social networking sites are being used by predators," the chief said. "Parents need to be aware of that."[[In-content Ad]]
