Final unofficial: 4-H, soil and water levies voted down

All 31 precincts reporting, unofficially, the Ohio State University Extension  Cooperative was voted down with 3,508 votes against and 2,440 votes for the levy.

The Soil and Water Conservation District Levy is also being voted down, with 3,848 votes against and 2,030 for.
 
In the Democratic race for Ohio's 86th House District, Bill Horne received 1,001 votes, and Laura Curliss received 479 votes. Pike County reported unofficial totals had Horne with 760 votes and Curliss with 464 votes. Clinton County reported Curliss with 508 votes and Horne with 256 votes.
 

Election day was mostly event-free of problems and issues according to members of the Highland County Board of Elections, though turnout at the polls was called "average."

"It went pretty well all over the county," said board president Kay Ayres. "But I would say that our turnout is about average."

"Cell phones were pretty quiet," said board member Steve Hunter.

Ayres said that cumulative results may be released around 8 p.m., as precincts begin reporting.  

The fair spring weather across Highland County May 4 made it easy for voters to get to their polling places. 

Some counties across Ohio dealt with issues such as rain and flooding, particularly in southern counties near the Ohio River, Ayres said. 

"I like the primary election being in May," she said. 

Board member Dinah Phillips said she thinks the later election date, which used to be held in March, is better for candidates. 
 "We've had real good weather, no rain, so I think the farmers are out in the fields, people out in the sun, and I think that has affected out turnout." 
  Philips said the board anticipates a larger turnout for the general election in November.
  Approximately 700 absentee ballots have been submitted so far for the primary election.
