The Role of the Highland County Veterans Service Commission
To oversee the operation of the Veterans Service Office; to provide temporary, emergency financial assistance to veterans, active duty members of the armed forces or the spouse, surviving spouse, dependent parent, minor child or ward of a veteran or active duty member of the armed forces; and to assist veterans and their dependents in obtaining federal V.A. benefits.
Temporary Financial Assistance
Emergency funds for food, housing, prescriptions and utilities may be provided to a veteran an active duty member of the armed forces or the spouse, surviving spouse, dependent parent, minor child or ward of a veteran or active duty member of the armed forces. The following factors will be considered when determining financial need: 1) The veteran must have been discharged "under honorable conditions"; 2) Applicants must be a bona fide resident of Highland County for at least three (3) months and must show proof of that residence, (i.e. signed verifiable lease, mortgage, utility bill in the applicant's name, etc...); 3) Unemployed applicants are required to be actively seeking employment and must be registered with the local Department of Jobs and Family Services prior to receiving assistance, unless proof of a physical disability is provided, which would prohibit the applicant from seeking and securing gainful employment.
Transportation
Veterans of Highland County may be transported to V.A. medical centers for their appointments at no cost. To take advantage of this valuable transportation service, proof of veteran status (DD form 214) is required. Contact us for more information about enrollment.
VA Benefits
The Highland County Veterans Service Commission employs an accredited service officer who can assist veterans and/or their dependents in filing for the following types of V.A. benefits: service-connected disability compensation, non-service connected disability pension, survivor's pension, death and indemnity compensation, burial benefits, V.A. healthcare enrollment, grave headstones, home loan guarantee certificates, vocational rehabilitation and upgrading or correcting a D.D. Form 214.
