The Cincinnati Enquirer has reported that "DHL Express has agreed to pay an $80,000 fine to the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for violating its wastewater permit in 2007 and 2008 at its former hub in Wilmington.
"The Ohio EPA said when DHL increased operations in Wilmington the treatment system wasn't enlarged to handle increased de-icing wastewater into Cowen Creek. In May 2008, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Ohio EPA investigated a fish/wildlife kill and chemical water quality standards violations in Cowen Creek," The Enquirer reported.
DHL announced plans to restructure its U.S. operations in May 2008, which resulted in the closing of the Wilmington hub. That closing cost the area more than 8,000 jobs, and contributed to Highland and Clinton counties having among the state's highest unemployment rates for the past 18 months.[[In-content Ad]]
