The footers and walls for the ongoing construction of the veterans memorial on the lawn of the Highland County Courthouse were poured Friday afternoon.
Joey Rammel, of Rammel Poured Walls of Lynchburg, said that the company wanted to donate its time to the project because, "Our fathers and uncles were in the service, and this is for them, and for everyone in Highland County."
The concrete should be finished by Monday, Rammel said, and will eventually support the monument stones.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Memorial Day 2011, and excavation on the project began the first week in January.
The current memorial, located on the south side of the courthouse, will eventually be moved to the southwest corner, where the new monument will stand. The ground will be leveled off to be even with the sidewalk, and a brick walkway will surround the monument. Bricks memorializing the name of a veteran have been on sale, and can still be purchased for $50 by calling (937) 393-0211.
