Community Action committee’s RETAIN Program provides support for workers affected by plant closure

With the upcoming closure of Pixelle Specialty Solutions in Chillicothe on Aug. 10, nearly 780 employees are expected to be affected by job displacement. 

This significant change comes at a time when many industries across southern Ohio are facing increased operational and financial pressures.

In response to these developments, the Community Action Committee of Pike County’s (CAC) Community Empowerment Program is working to connect individuals with vital support through the Retaining Employment and Talent After Injury/Illness Network (RETAIN). 

Funded by the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Disability Employment Policy in partnership with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, RETAIN is designed to help people remain in or return to the workforce following injury, illness, or behavioral health challenges such as stress or anxiety.

"The RETAIN program was built for moments like this, when uncertainty is high and the risk of workforce displacement is real,” said Megan Rippeth, RETAIN Service Coordinator.  

“Whether it’s a Pixelle worker, a healthcare professional, or someone in another field affected by stress, restructuring, or injury: RETAIN can help."

As our region navigates these changes, CAC anticipates increased demand for support services across multiple areas. Families may turn to Valley View Health Centers with heightened emotional and physical health needs, seek out assistance through Community Services, or seek assistance from OhioMeansJobs Pike County Career Center in their pursuit of new employment opportunities.

RETAIN services include:

Personalized case management and return-to-work planning;

Workplace coordination for modified duties or transitions;

Behavioral health support navigation; and

Assistance for those experiencing injury, illness, or acute stress.

Enrollment for RETAIN is open now and will close on Sept. 12, 2025. Individuals are encouraged to reach out as soon as possible to explore available services and supports. To learn more or to apply, contact the Community Empowerment Program at (740) 370-0890.
