The Clinton County YMCA, in collaboration with CMH Regional Health System, is hosting a 12-week weight loss and healthier living program called "Healthier Community." The premise of the program is based on the popular television show "The Biggest Loser."
Community members or businesses are encouraged to participate by forming teams of four to compete in this program. The goal is to eat healthier, exercise and lose weight. If an individual would like to participate, who does not have a team, they can do so and will be placed on a team.
"We are very excited to be able to host the Healthier Community program at the YMCA." says Greg Law, director of the YMCA. "CMH developed the Healthier Community program last January and we are working closely with CMH on the logistics and the hospital will conduct several of the programs."
"We decided to kick this program off in early 2010 when community members are making the New Year's resolutions which may include a healthier lifestyle."
Teams would be formed during the first two weeks of January and the kick-off of the 12-week program will officially begin Thursday, January 14.
Every Thursday evening between 6 to 8 p.m. participants will come to the YMCA to measure weight loss. From 7 to 7:30 p.m. there will be a 30 minute educational program on topics such as nutrition, stretching, exercise, diabetes prevention and other weight-loss help.
"Though we encourage participants to come on Thursday evening to participate in the educational program, we understand there will be conflicts." says Law. "We will offer the option of weighing in at the YMCA on Tuesdays between the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m."
Participant's weight loss will be recorded by the YMCA and will be kept confidential. Only the team's percentage totals for weight loss/gain will be shared with all teams. Participation fee is $1 per week, to be paid at the time of each weigh-in.
All monies collected will go into the "money pot" to be awarded at the end of the competition. The four-person team who loses the largest percentage of weight will win 80 percent of the money pot. In addition, both the individual male and individual female who loses the largest percentage of weight will each win 10 percent of the money pot.
Each participant who is not a YMCA member will have free access to the YMCA each weigh-in day during the 12 week program. In addition, the YMCA will not charge the joiner's fee to any Healthier Community participant if they join during the 12 week program.
As with any new weight loss or exercise program, participants are strongly encouraged to consult their physician before starting the program.
