Bright Elementary sixth graders participate in e3 Smart program

By
Whitney Gobin-
Bright Elementary School is one of 139 schools across the state of Ohio that was chosen to participate in the e3 Smart (Energy, Efficiency, Education) Program by American Electric Power program, sponsored by American Electric Power. This is a program designed to educate students on ways that their families can save energy and money.
Through science and math lessons, the sixth graders at Bright have learned how to do their part to reduce the energy demand in their homes. Each sixth grader received a kit including the following items: 4 CFL light bulbs, 8 draftstoppers (for switch plates and outlet gaskets), a furnace whistle, a hot water thermometer, a room thermometer, and a refrigerator thermometer, an LED night light, 17’ foam weather stripping, self-stick door sweep, and an Earth Massage showerhead (1.5gpm).
Students have begun to apply classroom learning at home to understand how they use energy for lighting, electronics and appliances, space heating and cooling, building insulation and water heating. Then they install devices from the kits or simply change behaviors to improve efficiency.
Schools and families incur no cost to participate in the program. The e3 Smart Program is being implemented by the Ohio Energy Project and is sponsored by AEP. The Ohio EPA recognized e3 Smart as an “Outstanding Energy Education Project”. Our kids have learned a lot and have been excited to participate in such a program.
