Bishop presents state of the city of Greenfield

The following is Greenfield City Manager Betty Bishop's state of the city:

The year 2010 seems like a whirlwind. Time flies when you enjoy what you
do and I have thoroughly enjoyed the entire year. The first day I was here I called a meeting of all staff, explained to them what I felt needed to be done to re-create a sense of community trust, and asked each of them to be on my team. What an excellent team they have been! I have seen them work like I never dreamed, they have accepted tasks that were not in their job descriptions and accomplished them beyond expectations. I believe it takes a strong workforce in services and safety as a solid foundation for a strong community and I believe in the employees of the City of Greenfield, Ohio.
You, the citizens of Greenfield have been most cooperative. We explained to you changes we needed to make to help make our community marketable and even if you did not fully agree you cooperated and helped make it happen. We made a lot of headway but our job is not finished. We need to continue our clean up efforts, lighting up our town, criminal investigations including enforcement, helping our neighbors, and taking extra pride in our properties. Greenfield is a beautiful community and when we all put that extra effort into our homes, business, and industries it makes our city a lighthouse reaching out to the entire world.
Again I want to thank Greenfield City Council for giving me this opportunity to serve them and the citizens of Greenfield. They have given me the freedom to work long and odd hours at the same time allowed me the freedom to take the time to catch up on needed rest and relaxation. This has been a very good council to work with. In our own ways we do our very best to keep each other honest and I appreciate how open and thorough everyone is with each other. As each council member looks at this report I want you to accept it in pride because each one of you has helped make it happen.
As I reflect over the past year some of the highlights that make a community a community and that are making Greenfield an outstanding community, I think of the many church and civic associations along with volunteer efforts that made things happen. The Highland County Community Action/Paint Creek Joint Fire Department/Greenfield Water Department fun days for the children, The Lions Club candy sale, The Rotary Club Wheels of Progress festival and the Ralph Phillips Center, The Veterans organizations remembering those who served, the parades (Memorial day, Wheels of Progress, Halloween and Eagles Christmas parades), the many volunteers who passed out light bulbs to every household and DPL for providing the bulbs for the “Light up Greenfield” project , The Christian center for providing for the needy, Greenfield McClain High School for opening up their beautiful facility to the public for many forms of entertainment throughout the year, The Historical Society History Day and Tour of Homes, each church reaching out to the community with comfort during these trying economical times, New Directions opening their new facility to the teens each week, Neighborhood Watch, the many volunteers it takes to plan, organize, and implement the sports leagues for all ages of children in Greenfield, and the many other groups and organizations working in and around the city. I especially thank the religious community of this city for the many prayers that have gone up for the financial recovery of the entire area.
Entrepreneurship is a big word but that big word is evidenced in a big way when we walk up and down the sidewalks and travel up and down the streets of Greenfield and see the many business and industrial people that provide us our jobs and the necessities of life we need. Blake’s Coffee Shop is a great example of the old celebrating 50 years in business, Dr. Eric Borsini and Drummonds Diagnostics are examples of growth and moving forward with new ideas, LaBamba Mexican Restaurant an example of the new, Sexton’s Used Car’s an example of stability, and Steven’s Hardware if you can’t find it Charlie has it. The year was climaxed by the announcement of Visibly Green, formerly Planet Walden, choosing Greenfield to be their home to bring new technological green energy and research and development jobs to our area. These are just a few examples of the many local people providing for and helping local people.
I submit this report to you using the reports given to me by each department. As I look over their reports I notice they are very humble about giving themselves extra credit for the things they get accomplished. To make up for their humbleness I will end this report with an itemized list of accomplishments that the administrative staff has prepared for me that has transpired over this past year. Some of them are mentioned in individual departmental reports but many of them are above and beyond.
