Berry pleads guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide

A Sardinia man who was involved in a car crash that resulted in the death of a local man has pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide.
Mickey Berry, who was indicted on the charge in March, had been scheduled to stand trial Monday in Highland County Common Pleas Court, but he pleaded guilty to the third-degree felony charge.
In August, a driver of another car in the crash, Kevin Dehaas, also pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide, and was sentenced to the maximum of five years in prison, with a lifetime suspension of driving privileges.
As previously reported in The Highland County Press, Dehaas was driving southbound on state Route 138 in a 1996 Saturn on Sept. 17, 2010 when he allegedly attempted to pass a Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by Berry, 23, according to a report from the Wilmington Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Henry Stroop, 64, of Lynchburg, was driving northbound on state Route 138 in a 2008 PT Cruiser and was struck head-on by both vehicles, according the Post. Stroop died from injuries sustained in the crash.
According to the sentencing entry, the state, represented by Highland County Prosecutor Anneka Collins, will recommend four years in prison, but "state and defense shall argue sentencing," before Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss.
Berry is represented by attorney Bruce Wallace.
A pre-sentence investigation has been ordered, and a sentencing hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 28.
