Bell from C.S. Bell Company marks historical Kansas landmark

Roger Barber submitted these photographs of a historical marker for Entre Nous College, taken near McCracken, Kan. The bell was made at the C.S. Bell Company in Hillsboro. New York native Howard R. Barnard (1863-1948) established Entre Nous “college” in northwest Rush County, Kan. in 1906.
He built a two-story building, hired teachers, and provided school buses, using for funds his sizable inheritance. This was one of the first schools to offer visual education, free transportation, and physical training. 
   By 1913, Barnard’s funds were depleted, and the school was closed. He taught in the public schools of Rush County, Kan., often going hungry to buy more books. At his death on Dec. 9, 1948, his large collection of books was left to the children of Rush County.[[In-content Ad]]
