Beery files to run for coroner

After serving Highland County for nearly 40 years, Highland County Coroner Dr. Paul Terrell has chosen to not seek re-election.
Terrell told The Highland County Press Wednesday that has served in the office since 1973.
"I was first elected in 1972 and took office in 1973, and I think that's long enough. I have enjoyed every bit of it," Terrell said. "We, as coroners, represent the deceased, and do not represent any other agency. We're the last person to consider their best interest."
Highland County Deputy Coroner Dr. Jeff Beery has filed to run for Highland County Coroner.
Beery has been a deputy coroner since 1999.
"I have really enjoyed the opportunity to serve with the squads, law enforcement and the funeral homes, and I hope to keep it up a while longer," Beery said.
Wednesday was the last day to file for the March 2012 primary election. Ohio could potentially have two primaries in 2012, with state and local candidates and the U.S. Senate race being decided in March, and the presidential primary and U.S. House of Representatives being decided on June 12. The last day to file for the March 7 primary was Wednesday, Dec. 7. The deadline for Independent candidates is March 5.
In other county races, former Highland County commissioner Gary Heaton has filed to run for county treasurer. Heaton, a Democrat, was defeated in his bid for re-election in 2010 by current commissioner Jeremy Shaffer. Heaton will face incumbent Republican Vickie Warnock. Republicans Lewis Teters and Zile have also filed, and will face Warnock in the primary.
Highland County Prosecutor Anneka Collins, a Republican, has filed petitions to run. Collins, a former assistant prosecutor in the office, was appointed earlier this year by the Republican Central Committee following the retirement of prosecutor Jim Grandey. Attorney Kim-McGuire Haines has taken out petitions to run as an Independent but has until March to file them.
Chad McConnaughey has filed petitions to run for Highland County Recorder against incumbent Richard Counter. Counter was appointed to the office by the Republican Central Committee earlier this year after former recorder Ike Hodson was appointed as Highland County Clerk of Courts. The clerk of courts office had been left open following the retirement of Paulette Donley.
Hodson has filed to run for clerk of courts.
Highland County Sheriff Ron Ward and Highland County Engineer Dean Otworth have filed and are running unopposed.
In state races, Hillsboro City Council member Pete Pence (D) will face incumbent Republican Cliff Rosenberger for Ohio's 91st District House seat.
