Ohio Republican and U.S. Congressman Steve Austria of Beavercreek has announced that he won't seek a third term, thus avoiding a potentially divisive GOP primary race against Third District Rep. Mike Turner, R-Centerville.

In a prepared statement, Congressman Austria said he felt “anger and frustration” about losing his district during the recent redistricting process.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed working on behalf of every one of my communities," Austria said. "(I) regret that I will not be able to continue the work I have been truly committed to, due to the redrawing of the (congressional) maps.”

Congressman Austria is currently serving his second term in the U.S. House of Representatives and represents the 7th Congressional District of Ohio. The district is comprised of Clark, Fairfield, Greene, Fayette, Pickaway and Perry counties, as well as parts of Ross and Franklin counties. Austria is only the 35th person to represent this portion of Ohio.

In the 112th Congress, Austria was appointed to the House Appropriations Committee, which is one of the most influential committees in the U.S. Congress as it wields control over all discretionary spending. In addition to other areas of jurisdiction, the committee and its subcommittees oversee funding for the Department of Defense.

Previous to serving in U.S. Congress, Austria served eight years in the Ohio Senate and two years in the Ohio House of Representatives. While in the Ohio Senate, Austria was elected to the post of majority whip, where he helped advance legislation such as tax reform and tort reform.  He also championed legislation to protect Ohio’s children and families by introducing and passing into law Jessica’s Law and the Adam Walsh Child Protection Safety Act. Prior to his time in public service he was a small businessman and financial advisor.

The oldest of nine children, Austria grew up in Xenia, Ohio. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Marquette University. He has resided in Beavercreek for the past 20 years, where he currently lives with his wife, Eileen and their three sons Brian, Kevin and Eric.

Congressman Mike Turner released the following statement upon new developments in the race for the 10th Congressional seat:

“I’d like to be one of the first to thank Steve for his service to Ohio and our country. I know he is an honorable man and throughout his time in office he has done what he thought was right for southwest Ohio and his constituents.

"I have filed for re-election and to represent the 10th Congressional District of Ohio. With signatures of support from Montgomery, Greene, and Fayette counties, I look forward to continuing the call for an end to the reckless spending of taxpayer’s dollars in Washington and working on behalf of our community to grow jobs and protect Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.”[[In-content Ad]]
