In defense of a free press

The Boston Globe wants every newspaper in America to attack President Donald Trump.
This column by me is an opinion piece standing bravely against such an attack.
Mainstream newspapers are on their high horse shouting that the president is an enemy of the free press. What hypocrisy. By and large, except in some small-town independent newspapers such as The Highland County Press, we don’t have a free press in this country. We have a press that is composed of useful idiots (a term often attributed to Lenin or Saul Alinsky, but likely originating in Italy, see Wikipedia).
What has happened in this country is an outrage.
Co-opting the valid anti-segregation movement of the 1950s and 1960s, every cause for every sort of deviancy, anti-American and unpatriotic action imaginable has crowded under the noble tent of racial equality. The useful idiots shout down any sense of decency, rationality and common sense (just watch the online responses to this column for validation of this statement).
For newspapers and media outlets who have fought President Trump hammer and tong since the night of the election, it is indeed rich for them to now play the victim. Victimhood is on the rise in the country and is a popular way to employ passive-aggressive behavior in an attempt to get their way. A pox on all of them. I hope every last one of them goes out of business.
Intelligent people can have an intelligent discussion about today’s political conditions. Just two weeks ago, I was in Guatemala and spent an enjoyable evening talking to an American friend of mine there. He is from Indiana and is a flaming liberal in the traditional sense of the word. He says he can hardly come back to the States now and indeed avoids doing so, having acclimated himself to the Guatemalan culture and the abject poverty there.
He finds the materialism and shallowness here abhorrent beyond his ability to tolerate it. So, as a liberal and a conservative, we shared a bottle of wine and discussed current conditions. The conclusion is we both think what is going on in the United States today is very healthy, for it is causing everyone to question who we are and where we are going.
This is a valid exercise and, at least when it has happened in the past, has led us as a nation to a better place. We both hope this happens again.
In the meantime, the useful idiots are screaming. They fear the goodies they have endeavored to have memorialized in federal law will continue to pour their bounty upon them. These benefits are indeed poor, for they focus on the material, not the spiritual aspects of people’s lives. It is clear that this country desperately needs a spiritual awakening in many areas and on many levels.
For a country that allows a city such as Chicago to record more than 70 shootings in a weekend without one arrest is indeed spiritually broken. For a country that allows a congressional district in Ohio to have a multitude of voters on its rolls whose age is above 116 years is clearly broken. For a great city, such as New York, to allow safety on the streets and in the subways to degenerate to a level that is significantly impacting tourism is clearly broken.
We have these examples all over the country, from human defecation on the streets of San Francisco and Cincinnati to a terrorist camp in New Mexico training children to commit mass murder in schools.
Socialism has never worked anywhere. In those vaunted Scandinavian halls where the useful idiots of the world point for examples of its success, cracks are appearing. It seems that in the colder climates it just takes longer for socialism to fail than elsewhere, but it is failing. Yet, the useful idiots still seem to think it is the answer for us.
Today, capitalism is derided by all sorts of adjectives spewing forth from all sorts of useful idiots, while we watch contemporary attempts at socialism fail dramatically, Venezuela, that former beacon of democracy in South America, being the latest poster child. Yet, capitalism, coupled with representative democracy, is the only form of societal organization that has ever in the history of the world lifted the most people from poverty and enriched the most lives from the top to the bottom of the economic spectrum.
I think Donald Trump is probably the greatest president since Abraham Lincoln (who, ironically was assassinated by a Democrat and segregationist) and perhaps even the greatest president since George Washington. He is doing yeoman’s work against the useful idiots. I pray that he succeeds.
