  • Mourning dove

I have always imagined that the pretty gray bird had gotten its name from the fact that it called its “who hoo, hoo hoo” in the early morning hours.

  • Past and present
I felt a part of the creek valley, I had shared a wonderful partnership with my husband, and I knew that we were both an ever so small part of a tradition that we have only just begun to learn.

  • Swarm catchers
Greg and I knew that swarms rarely linger longer than 24 hours, and we did not really know how long this one had been there, so we knew that it was important to get right to work.

I could see the rabbits lazily stretching out across their cages. I watched as the goats ambled contentedly across their yard, nibbling on the hay that Greg had given them just before dinner.

  • Springtime delight
Spring is the time for new life. Over the past two weeks, I have set out 24 styrofoam trays in our two float beds. By my reckoning, I have started about 4,472 herb and vegetable seeds.

  • Then there were three
The newcomer stopped and sniffed at every creek smell. The other two ran ahead, looking curiously back at her. It all seemed so amazing to this third dog, who for the first time was exploring our familiar world.
