Mustangs earn county rivalry win at Hillsboro

HILLSBORO — The Lynchburg-Clay continued their improved play with a non-conference Highland County rivalry victory Tuesday night, defeating the host Hillsboro Indians, 77-55, en route to their 13th win of the season.
With the 22-point win over Hillsboro, the Mustangs have a winning record of 13-9 overall with one regular-season game left on the schedule this Friday night.
As for the Tuesday win, the first half between the two Highland County counterparts was played closely, with LCHS holding a seven-point lead after one quarter, and Hillsboro cut that lead down to two points when halftime arrived.
Even in the early stages of the third quarter, the score was tied, but the Mustangs didn’t lose grasp of their advantage and eventually broke away to lead by 15 points once the third frame came to a close.
Back to the first half where the Indians and Mustangs battled fiercely as neither team wanted to give an inch, the Mustangs were first to score points with a basket by Bryce Binkley, but those points were equaled by a layup from Brayden Hunter of Hillsboro.
Binkley put the Mustangs back in front with another two-point basket, but the Indians (5-16) went into the lead with Hunter sinking a 3-pointer with 5:27 on the clock. HHS added to their lead with a bucket by Tate Davis, leading 7-4 with 4:07 left in the opening frame.
The two teams continued to exchange baskets, but from the 3:08 mark until the end of the first quarter LCHS outscored Hillsboro, 11-2, with all 11 points for LCHS coming from Brady Chisman, including two 3-pointers, a three-point play and a two-point basket, to complete the first-quarter scoring for a 17-10 lead.
Both teams kept the score close in the second quarter with Hillsboro’s Bryce Parsons scoring the first points of the second quarter, but LC’s Denver Clinton scored two points on a fast-break chance.
Chisman increased the Mustangs’ lead with a basket at the 5:18 mark, but the Indians answered with eight consecutive points off a jumper by Nic Burns, a layup from Dorian Stewart, points in the paint from Steven Kibler and a basket by Davis, bringing Hillsboro to within a point of tying the score at 21-20 with 3:52 left in the first half.
Binkley brought the Mustangs to a three-point lead and eventually after the Indians hit a shot of their own, Chisman sank a 3-pointer for a four-point Mustangs lead.
The Indians answered with four straight points through put-back baskets on second- and third-chance opportunities by Stewart and Parsons, tying the score at 26-26 with 1:59 left in the second frame.
The quarter ended with the Mustangs outscoring the Indians, 5-3, leaving LCHS in front at 31-29 at halftime.
Hillsboro opened the third by tying the score at 31-31 with a basket by Kibler, then the Mustangs took a four-point lead with point from Logan Shope and Clinton. Hillsboro got back to within two points of the LCHS lead with a put-back basket by Kibler, then the momentum went in favor of the Mustangs, as their offense and their defense clicked at the same time.
LCHS went on a 14-0 run from the 4:59 mark of the third to the 1:12 mark, taking a 16-point lead at 49-33.
LC’s run of points started with a Clinton 3-pointer, followed with a 3-pointer from Ian Waits, coming off a rebound and assist by Binkley. After a full timeout by Hillsboro, the Mustangs continued their scoring run with two points by Binkley and two made free throws by Waits, then Waits followed those points with a steal and fast break layup with 1:43 left in the quarter as the Indians were forced to call a 30-second timeout.
Chisman scored two points following the timeout as Waits gained a steal and assist in the process, putting the Mustangs ahead 49-33. HHS broke up the scoring run with two converted free throws by Hunter, only to see the Mustangs end the third with another 3-pointer by Chisman, and the frame was completed with two points by Shope for a 54-39 Mustangs lead.
LCHS added 20 more points to their total in the fourth quarter with five points by Waits, four points from Clinton, Chisman with five points, Binkley with four points, and Shope with two points in the quarter.
Hillsboro scored 16 points in the fourth quarter with five points from Kibler, nine points by Parsons and two points from Deegan Bloomfield.
For the game, the Mustangs were led by Chisman with 24 points, as he made five 3-pointers, four two-point baskets and he was 1-of-1 from the free-throw line.
LCHS also had 17 points from Binkley as he totaled seven two-point buckets and sank one 3-pointer. Waits finished with 14 points, finishing with four two-point field goals, one 3-pointer and he went 3-of-3 from the free-throw line.
Clinton gave the Mustangs 11 points in the win, totaling three two-point basket, one 3-pointer and he was 2-of-2 in his free-throw attempts. Also for the Mustangs, final scoring totals included Shope with six points and JJ Massey with five points, including a 3-pointer in the second quarter.
As a team, the Mustangs finished 8-of-8 from the free-throw line.
Parsons led HHS in scoring with 15 points, making six baskets, and he was 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. Kibler followed with 13 points, making five two-point baskets and a 3-pointer. Hunter totaled 11 points, making two two-point baskets, one 3-pointer and he was 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Other HHS scoring included Stewart (eight), Davis (four), Burns (two) and Bloomfield (two). As a team, the Indians were 9-of-12 from the free-throw line.
LCHS (13-9) has one regular-season game left, taking place Friday, Feb. 10 at home against the undefeated Fairfield Lions, who are 21-0 on the season. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
The Indians also have one regular-season game remaining, on Tuesday, Feb. 14 on the road at Peebles.
