Lady Indians win on Senior Night

HILLSBORO — For the ninth straight time, a Hillsboro girls soccer senior class left the field with a win on Senior Night as HHS scored three unanswered goals in the final 43 minutes to seal a 3-2 non-league win over the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs.
The win by HHS puts them at 13-1-1 overall, as they are a No. 1 seed in the upcoming sectional tournament next week. Lynchburg-Clay is a No. 2 seed for Division III.
"Lynchburg-Clay definitely brought a game to us," HHS coach Leslie Molen said. "We needed a game like this … early on, they (LC) moved well, and we were asleep at the wheel.
"We eventually woke up late in the first half … but both teams played well, and it came down to who wanted the win more. Our seniors wanted this win."
It was Lynchburg-Clay (11-4) who got the early start with the first two goals of the match when Brandi Hunter scored within the first five minutes of the match with 36:57 left on the clock off the assist by Sam Whitenack.
The second goal came from Taylor Scott with the assist by Sydney Cromer with 21:59 left in the opening half.
The minutes continued to tick away in the first half as LC held the same two-goal lead with their defense keeping HHS shots away from the goal … that was until the 2:22 mark with Kaylynn Bell making it a one-goal match as she scored with the assist from Cheyney Myers as Bell's goal was kicked at an angle to the left side of the goal.
In the second half, the Lady Mustangs' defense near the goal continued to keep the ball out of the net, but the Lady Indians were persistent as Kaylee Achor scored a goal from 19 yards away with 27:25 on the second half clock for a tied 2-2 score. The assist was credited to Madison Colliver.

As for Colliver, it wasn't the last the Lady Mustangs heard from her as she scored what was the game-winning goal as she knocked the ball past the keeper with 11:01 left in the match, unassisted, for the 3-2 lead.
LC had more opportunities to tie the score, but a timely save with 52 seconds on the clock by HHS keeper Rachel Sexton kept the one-goal lead. Sexton totaled nine saves. LC keeper Emma Setty also had numerous saves throughout the match.
"We didn't cover well with our midfielders (Monday), and it cost us two goals," LC coach Dennis West said. "We did play defense the way we needed to play it.
"I thought we played well for most of the match, but we can't have breakdowns."
Molen spoke about her three seniors in Taylor Stanforth, Taylor Moberly and Zara Jenson Morgan.
"This was a small group but are a great group in many ways," she said. "They play level-headed and are coachable. I've enjoyed my time with this group."
For LC, their next match will be on Wednesday as the girls will not only have their senior night, but will play for a league championship as they host the Eastern Brown Lady Warriors. If LC wins, not only are they league champions, but they will earn a perfect league season, gaining the golden soccer ball trophy.
HHS has one regular-season match remaining, a South Central Ohio League match, on Thursday, Oct. 11 when they travel to face the London Lady Red Raiders at 5 p.m.
