Lady Indians win season opener over Blanchester; Storer earns 1st career head coaching victory

The Hillsboro Lady Indians opened their 2022-23 season with a victory on Friday night and in the process saw first-year head coach Heather Storer gain her first win as a varsity head coach in her debut, as HHS won against the Blanchester Lady Wildcats, 56-42 at Hillsboro High School.
Hillsboro led 14-6 at the end of the first quarter, and after scoring 18 points in the second (while allowing 12 points in the same frame), they held a halftime lead of 32-18.
“I couldn’t be more excited,” HHS head coach Storer said. “It was a ton of energy to come into the locker room and to come off the floor to a room full of girls that I love, and it was fun.”
Hillsboro scored their first points of the game with a basket from Rylie Scott at the 6:31 mark of the first frame, and that lead went to 6-0 following two made free throws by Blake Herdman and a layup from Peighton Bledsoe with 5:15 left in the opening quarter.
“In girls basketball, you want to be the team that starts quick when we have the opportunities, and starting off with a 6-0 lead is a good start to get the game going,” Storer said.
Blanchester’s first points of the season came from Kaylee Coyle, but those two points were answered with a 3-pointer at the top of the key by Herdman for a 9-2 advantage with the clock reading 2:59.
Hillsboro added to their lead with a basket by Addyson Miles, and later, after two points by the visitors, it was Bledsoe with a 3-pointer from the corner of the court for a 14-4 Lady Indians advantage.
Following two final points by BHS to end the first quarter trailing by a 14-6 score, both teams turned up their offensive pressure with HHS outscoring the Lady ’Cats, 18-12 in the second.
In the second frame, HHS had three points by Bledsoe, while Miles scored nine points in the frame with four two-point baskets and a converted free throw. Morgan Garman, Kallie Fraley and Herdman all scored two points in the frame.
With Hillsboro leading by 14 points to start the third quarter, they played nearly even with Blanchester in the third quarter. HHS scored 13 points, while Blanchester added 12 points to their side of the scoreboard for a 45-30 Hillsboro lead after three quarters were played.
In the third, HHS had two points by Kobie Miles, three points from Scott, two points by Fraley, a 3-pointer off a shot by Herdman and three points by Maddie Taylor.
Blanchester outscored HHS 12-11 in the fourth frame, though HHS had two points by Bledsoe, six points by Kobie Miles, two made free throws by Addyson Miles and a made free throw from Garman.
“One of the points I made after the game was I don’t want to be a part of a team that doesn’t fight, that doesn’t have a lot of energy when we need it, and I applaud these girls with all the effort they brought each day to practice,” Storer said. “They’re competitive, and they want to work hard. We might not be the most skilled on certain aspects of the floor, but these girls will work hard, and they want to win.”
In all, eight Hillsboro players reached the scoring column, with Addyson Miles leading the way with 13 points, followed by Herdman and Bledsoe with 10 points each. Kobie Miles totaled eight points in the win, while the remainder of the final scoring included Scott (five points), Fraley (four points), German (three points) and Taylor (three points).
Blanchester was led by Madi Tipton with nine points, Tori Potts with eight points and Coyle with seven points.
In all, BHS totaled 14 two-point baskets, three 3-pointers and they were 5-of-16 from the free-throw line. HHS finished with 18 two-point baskets, three 3-pointers and they were 11-of-18 with their free-throw attempts.
Hillsboro (1-0) will next play Monday, Nov. 21 on the road at Peebles in non-conference play. That will be the start of four straight road games, as HHS is scheduled to play at Zane Trace on Wednesday, Nov. 23, at Jackson on Monday, Nov. 28 and at Miami Trace on Wednesday, Nov. 30.
