Lady Indians reign over Lady Chieftains in sectionals

The Hillsboro Lady Indians defended their home field one final time this season, defeating Logan, 5-2 Thursday at Richards Memorial Field in the second round of the Division I SE District Sectional tournament.
HHS, who defeated Jackson 7-1 earlier in the week to open postseason play, impressed with their offensive attack, scoring in different ways, from near the goal all the way to nailing a shot from the middle of the field.
Hillsboro (13-4-1) and Logan Lady Chieftains were tied at halftime, 2-2.
The first HHS goal came from junior Lauren Grimes with the assist from junior Leah Pence. The score was tied later in the half when senior Lauren Colliver scored her first of two goals.
In the second half Colliver, who has now started 74 consecutive games for the Lady Indians, scored her second goal of the game, sending the ball into the back of the net. During her four seasons at HHS, Colliver has now been a part of 58 wins with HHS (58-10-6), not missing a single match in her high school career.
Colliver started the Lady Indians' scoring with her second goal, with the assist from Pence.
Then came the longest goal of the night by HHS, perhaps the season, off the foot of sophomore Taylor Stanforth.
Stanforth sent the ball from at least the 45-yard line, a skyscraper shot that floated in the night sky, until it suddenly dropped into the the bottom left corner of the goal with 18:37 remaining in the game. The goal drew loud applause from the fans as the excited Stanforth was hugged by her teammates.
Thirty-four seconds later (18:03), Pence gave Hillsboro a three-goal lead (5-2) with a close goal right in front of the Logan keeper.
The sectional win puts the No. 2 seeded Lady Indians against the No. 1 seeded Marietta Lady Tigers on Saturday at 4 p.m. at MHS. The Lady Tigers defeated Chillicothe (Lady Cavaliers) 3-0 Thursday.
The win was the 95th in the coaching career of Leslie Molen.
"Defensively, we knew we had to keep up with their best player, and we knew we needed to keep her contained," Molen said. "We did a better job of that in the second half.
"Credit Logan, they were a tough team, but we continued to pass the ball well and had pressure."
Molen said her team played better in the final 40 minutes.
"The team came out and played with a lot of heart in the second half," she said.
"They kept getting back up when knocked down, and the kids took good shots. Logan had a good keeper."
