;>Indians put up an inspirational defensive performance, before losing, 13-7, to the London Red Raiders Friday at Richards Memorial Field.
The Red Raiders, coached by Bill Dennis, entered the game at 2-1 in the South Central Ohio League and 3-4 overall. After stopping the Indians,
three-and-out, on the game's first possession, the Raiders marched 67 yards in seven plays to dent the scoreboard.
Jake Burns rushed for nine yards for a second and one to start the scoring drive. Quarterback Dylan Follrod picked up five yards to move the
chains. Then, on a first-and-10 at the Hillsboro 43, London's Justin Hoosier streaked down the north sideline and went virtually untouched into the
endzone. Drew Newman's kick made  it a 7-0 score with 9:23 on the clock.
After starting the ballgame with two dropped passes, the Hillsboro offense recovered on its next possession. Hawkins carried the ball for three yards and then picked up another six for second down. After quarterback Kordell Ford was dropped for a loss on third down, Ford came right back and picked up the first down on fourth and three.
With the ball at midfield, Ford rambled his way into London territory with a 36-yard blast to the 14-yard line. After runs by Matt Gallimore and Ford, the Indians called again on Bodhi Hawkins. Hawkins carried the ball to the six-yard line and went down in obvious pain with 5:46 left in the opening quarter.
The game was delayed several minutes while Dr. David Gunderman, Sports Medicine personnel and coaches checked on the injured player. Hawkins made
one attempt to get up, then fell back in pain. Hillsboro Fire and Rescue was summoned and Hawkins was transported to Highland District Hospital. As Hillsboro Fire and Rescue workers placed Hawkins on the stretcher, a teammate could be heard saying, "We love ya, Bodhi." Hawkins gave a thumbs up signal to the home crowd, who cheered for the Hillsboro senior.
As play resumed, the London defense stopped Gallimore on fourth and two, as Kyle Fisher made the tackle.
The first quarter came toa close as Jorden Stratton and Jerrad Luschek brought down Hoosier at the London 22.
An inspired Hillsboro defense continued to stop the Red Raiders in the second quarter. Allen Holbrook, Christian Wildey, Dow Kiefer and Chris Stapleton had several tackles and assists. After a holding call at the 7-minute mark left London with a first and 18, Stratton wrapped up Follrod for a loss, setting up a London punt.
Hillsboro's Chase Gilliland dropped Fisher's kick, but quickly recovered the loose football. The Indians took over at their own 10 and quickly went
to work. Gallimore rushed for 11 yards and a first down to the 21. Wildey then had the Indians' biggest play of the night, taking the handoff from Ford for 77 yards to the London three. After a timeout, Coach Brian Spicer called Wildey's number again. Wildey responded with a three-yard touchdown. Kiefer nailed the extra point out of Gilliland's hold, who was in for the injured Hawkins.
Wildey's TD at the 3:47 mark proved to be Hillsboro's only score.
A second-half touchdown run by Kyler White, who had a great game playing for the injured Hawkins, was called back due to a holding penalty.
Jake Burns scored on a 65-yard third-quarter run to make  the difference. The point after was blocked and the score remained 13-7.
"We were happy with the effort, but not the outcome," Spicer said after the game. "I thought we played a solid, four-quarter game and we certainly had nothing to be ashamed of."
Hillsboro falls to 1-3 in the South Central Ohio League and 2-6 overall.
London improves 3-1 in the SCOL and 4-4 overall.
