Indians thump Madison-Plains, 42-34, on Homecoming

On a perfect night for high school football, the Hillsboro Indians upended the Madison-Plains Golden Eagles, 42-34, on Homecoming night at Richards Memorial Field before an enthusiastic home crowd.
Shortly after crowning Chris Butler as the 2010 Hillsboro homecoming king and Danielle Sink as the 2010 homecoming queen, Bodhi Hawkins put the Indians on the scoreboard by diving into the endzone from a yard and a half out with just four minutes off the clock.
An 18-yard run by quarterback Aric Carroll set up Hawkins' TD. The point after by Dow Kiefer made it 7-0.
With 2:53 remaining in the initial period, Carroll broke free for a 30-yard touchdown and the Tribe was up, 14-0.
Madison-Plains got on the board late in the first quarter when Ryne Davis raced into the endzone on a 53-yard touchdown run. Devin Kilbarger drilled the extra point to cut the deficit in half, at 14-7, as the quarter came to a close.
On their first possession of the second period, the Eagles did what they do best, offensively. They got the ball in the hands of speedy sophomore halfback Stephen Lemieux. Lemieux had runs of five and seven yards, caught a Seth Casto pass for eight yards, then burst into the endzone from the Hillsboro 35-yard line. Kilbarger made the point after and the game was knotted at 14-14.
After regaining possession, Hillsboro went to its passing game. Carroll found freshman Kordell Ford for a 21-yard completion and a first down at the Indians' 38. Carroll then laced a spiral to junior Chase Gilliland down the sideline. Gilliland caught the ball cleanly and cut back to the center of the field, outrunning the Eagles' defense for a 62-yard touchdown reception
with 2:39 to play in the half. Kiefer made the extra point for a 21-14 lead.
Madison-Plains wasn't quitting, however. Aided by a 15-yard personal foul penalty against Hillsboro, the Golden Eagles marched 65 yards for
another score. With 54 seconds left in the half, Davis ran it in from 29 yards. The point after by Kilbarger split the uprights to tie it again at 21-all.
Hillsboro made good use of the final seconds of the half, though. Ford returned the ensuing kickoff all the way to the Madison-Plains 24-yard line. After a pair of incomplete passes, Carroll found Chris Stapleton for 23 yards to the Eagles' one-yard line. Carroll bulled it into the endzone on second down for the TD and a hard-fought 28-21 halftime edge.
With 4:44 left in the third period, Ford added a touchdown for Hillsboro running from the "wildcat" formation after Carroll was injured. Kiefer's kick was again right on the money and Brian Spicer's squad owned a 35-21 advantage. Neither team scored again in the period.
At the 8:33 mark in the fourth quarter, Hawkins scored his second touchdown from 11 yards out and Hillsboro was comfortable ahead, 42-21.
Casto connected with Davis with 18 seconds left in the game to make it 42-28.
Madison-Plains recovered the onside kick at the Hillsboro 48-yard line with 15 seconds left. Casto then hooked up one more time with Davis on the game's final play, leaving Hillsboro with a 42-34 victory.
Hillsboro improves to 1-2 in the South Central Ohio League and 2-5 overall. Madison-Plains falls to 0-4 in the SCOL and 0-7 overall.
Hillsboro hosts the London Red Raiders on Friday, Oct. 15.
