Indians tangle for victories over Tigers and Bearcats

GREENFIELD — The Hillsboro Indians won their fourth straight team match Thursday evening, as they not only improved their South Central Ohio League record, but their overall mark, by sweeping their matches against host McClain and visiting Paint Valley.
"We wrestled well and had some good matches from the guys," HHS head coach Nathan Horne said. "We won, and that's important for us. Overall, I was pleased.
"McClain gave us some good upper weight competition. Again, I'm pleased with how we wrestled."
For their wins on Thursday at McClain High School, the Indians wrestled and defeated the Tigers first, winning by a score of 58-16. Following a short break, the Indians defeated the Bearcats of PV, 65-13.
MHS won the final match of the evening by defeating the Bearcats, 51-30. The Tigers will wrestle this weekend at Teays Valley in a multi-school tournament.
"We were OK," MHS head coach Shane Paul said. "Hillsboro has a good program and has a shot at the league title. We knew coming in they were a good team, but we fought hard, and I'm proud of that.
"We still have a long way to go, and we are wrestling top competition to get better, to gain the experience to continue to grow and be a better team."
In the match, involving the Indians and Tigers, it was Hillsboro winning 11 of the 14 matches.
The Highland County dual began with Ryan Kelley (HHS) winning by pin fall over Sid Wardlow (MHS) at 3:15 in the 126-pound weight class.
McClain's Coty Barnhart defeated Cody Whaley of HHS in the 132-pound class, by a 12-0 major decision.
At 138 pounds, Hillsboro's Craig Jackson won by major decision (20-8) over Jacob Badgley (MHS).
The 145-pound match was won by Dillon Hunick (HHS) via forfeit. That was followed with the 152-pound match where Hillsboro's Jed Asmus won with a 10-6 decision over Ethan Paul.
Kordell Ford (HHS) continued his very successful season with a pin fall win over Brandon Nebbergall (MHS) at 1:46 in the 160-pound match.
In one of the most competitive matches of the entire event, Connor Johnston gave the Indians another victory, defeating Roscoe East (MHS) in the 170-pound match by a score of 6-4. After the first round, it was Johnston who led 4-2, and he added two more points in the second round, while East scored one. In the final two-minute round, East scored one point.
That win was followed with another victory by HHS, as Darian Schumacher (HHS) pinned Gable Smith (MHS) in the 182-pound match at 1:15.
Drew Huffman of Hillsboro also won via pin fall (1:21), defeating Brendon Goble (MHS) at 195 pounds.
McClain's top wrestler, Brandon Davis continued his dominating season at 220 pounds, as he defeated Skylar Murphy (HHS) by pin fall at 1:46.
In the 285-pound match, McClain's Dylan Trefz defeated Jesse Hale (HHS) with a pin fall. Also winning by pin fall for the Indians to wrap up the dual were Brandon Carter (HHS) over Kylee Stroud (MHS) at 106 and Toby Warrington (HHS) over Jamaine Barnhart (MHS) at 113 pounds.
Matt West (HHS) ended the match with a win via forfeit at 120 pounds.
For HHS against Paint Valley, the two non-league opponents wrestled to a 65-13 score with HHS winning the match.
Whaley and Jackson each won against PV, as both won via forfeit.
At 145 pounds, Hunick won via tech. fall for the Indians. At 152, Tegan McFadden won for the Paint Valley Bearcats.
In the 160-pound match, Ford (HHS) won for the second time, gaining a pin fall win in 52 seconds.
Johnston (HHS) won again with a pin fall victory at 170 pounds. Schumacher followed with forfeit victory at 182 pounds.
Carter won with a forfeit win at 106, as did Warrington at 113. West (HHS) wrestled tough but fell to Tyler Stoneburner of PV at 120 pounds by a 15-8 score.
Kelley won his 126-pound match via forfeit.
In the final team match of the tri-match, the Tigers defeated the Bearcats, 51-30.
Badgley began with a 138-pound win via forfeit for MHS, followed with Dominic Salomone winning at 145 pounds for PV with a forfeit win.
McFadden (PV) won for the second time on the night, this time winning his 152 pound match over Paul (MHS) via pin fall.
At 160 pounds, Nebbergall (MHS) won via DQ over PV.
In the 170-pound match, East (MHS) won with a 8-7 decision over Paint Valley's Caleb Johnson.
The 182-pound match was won by Smith (MHS) via forfeit.
Mark Clifford of PV won the 195-pound match over Goble (MHS) with a pin fall.
