Indians fall to Gallia, 44-14

The Gallia Academy Blue Devils posted a 17-6 halftime lead and held a 29-6 edge after three quarters, en route to a 44-14 non-league victory over the Hillsboro Indians Friday night at Gallia's Memorial Field.
With veteran linemen averaging roughly 275 pounds, the Blue Devils' ground game controlled the tempo early on. Runningbacks Austin Wilson, Drew Young and Brandon Taylor combined for almost 150 yards on the ground in the first half alone. Wilson's up-the-middle burst from 17 yards out gave the Devils a 14-0 first quarter lead. Hillsboro countered with a sustained drive, led by Aric Carroll, Dow Kiefer and Chase Gilliland, that culminated in an Indians' touchdown to make it 14-6. However, a Tyler Hannon field goal left it 17-6 in favor of Gallia Academy at the half.
Gallia increased its lead to 23-6 midway through the third period.
With 1:18 left in the third quarter, Blue Devils senior quarterback Ethan Moore, who turned in an outstanding game, scored on a fourth-down run to essentially seal the win.
The Devils tacked on another quick score to move in front, 37-6. The Indians struggled to sustain offensive possessions and couldn't shut down the Devils' running game. With six minutes remaining in the fourth, Hillsboro fullback Matt Gallimore capped an eight-play, 80-yard scoring drive with a five-yard touchdown run. Hillsboro's two-point conversion by Gallimore made it a 37-14 game. On the ensuing kickoff, the Indians tried a short kick that was recovered by Taylor at the Gallia 30-yard line.
The Blue Devils inserted sophomore quarterback TJaye McCalla for Moore and began to run down the clock. Gallia marched to the Indians' 15-yard line before turning the ball over on downs with 3:06 to play.
Hillsboro turned the ball back to the Blue Devils and the Gallia underclassmen came in to score one final TD at the 1:07 mark to make it a 44-14 game. Gallia hosts Wellston next week.
Hillsboro 1-1 will be at Richards Memorial Field Friday, Sept. 10 for their home opener against Wilmington.
