Indians dominate mat for home victory vs. Rams

HILLSBORO — The weather may have ruined the plans of an in-school dual on Friday afternoon, but it didn't end the Hillsboro Indians' plans for a non-league dual win as they hosted and defeated the Greeneview Rams 60-22 inside the Hillsboro Middle School Gym.
Being just their second event of the season, the Indians were rested, and it showed on the mat as they won five matches via pin fall and gained five wins via forfeit. HHS lost just four matches, three via pin fall and one by majority decision.
"The team was looking forward to wrestling in front of the school, but we can't control the weather," HHS coach Nathan Horne said. "We've had some time off, but it was good for us in one sense, but again, we were a little rusty.
"But it was good to get back on the mat."
The match of the night came from a HHS win by Matt West as he wrestled in the 126-pound class and won by pin fall in the third period. West improves to 4-2 on the year.
West and his opponent were tied at 3-3 following the first two period with West leading the first period, and his opponent rallying in the second period. In the third period, West maneuvered his way to the lead, eventually pinning his opponent at the 4:33 mark of the match.
"Matt wrestled in the best match of the night," Horne said.
Hillsboro's Craig Jackson dominated his match against Tyler Saunders (9-10) in the 145-pound match, winning by pin fall at the 28-second mark of the first period. Jackson's win moves his record to 4-0 overall.

Kordell Ford followed with a pin fall of his own, defeating Joe Brown (11-8) in their 152-pound match at the 25-second mark of the first period. Ford, a state placer last year as a sophomore, moves to 4-0 this season.
In the 220-pound match, Hillsboro's Skylar Murphy took control in the second period, pinning Wyatt Hovan (11-8) at the 3:00 mark in the match during the second period for his first win of the year. Murphy is now 1-3 overall.
Ending the night was Brandon Carter with a pin fall win in his 106-pound match against Harrison Gallagher (9-8). Carter won via pin fall 31 seconds into the first period. A state qualifier from one season ago, Carter improved to 4-1 overall this year.
Winning via forfeit for HHS were Chase Vance (113), Dillon Hunick (138), Jed Asmus (160), Connor Johnston (170) and Jesse Hale (285). State qualifiers from last season, Hunick improved his '12 season mark to 4-1, and Johnston now stands at 4-1.
Hale moves his record to 2-3.
In the very first match of the dual meet, Ryan Kelly (HHS) lost in the second period to Mason Gallagher (16-3) in their 120-pound match. Both wrestlers were state alternates last season. Kelly is now 3-2 on the year.
The 132-pound match saw Cody Whaley of HHS fall in the second period to a pin fall (3:35) to state placer Andrew Hoskins (18-1). Whaley moves to 3-3 this season.
Drew Huffman (HHS) lost in the first period of his 182-pound match to state runner-up and Fargo All-American Armani Robinson via pin fall. Huffman is now 3-3 on the year, and Robinson improves to 19-0 this season.
In a very competitive match that went the distance, Trey Burns (HHS) lost to Adrian Harding (16-3) in their 195-pound match in a majority decision at 14-7.
The Indians will take to the road in their next match, as they travel to West Jefferson on Dec. 29.
