Hillsboro Indians win sectional opener

The Hillsboro Indians opened with a Division II SE District sectional quarterfinal tournament game on Saturday evening with a win on the road, defeating the host Athens Bulldogs, 54-37.
HHS entered the game as a No. 17 seed, while Athens was a No. 16 seed, and the two teams played close in the first frame, though it was the Indians trailing 11-6 at the end of the first frame.
Hillsboro had four points from Bryce Parsons and two points by Steven Kibler in the first quarter.
HHS outscored the Bulldogs, 12-11 in the second quarter with seven points from Tate Davis (including a 3-pointer and two two-point baskets), a free throw made by Kibler and four points off two baskets by Dorian Stewart.
With the Indians trailing 22-18 at halftime, they overcame that deficit in the third quarter with a 12-point output in the third frame, while their defense held Athens to seven points.
For the Indians in the third, it was six points by Kibler (two two-point field goals and a 2-of-2 performance from the free-throw line), along with four points by Stewart and two points from Parsons that equaled their 12 points scored, putting the Indians in front, 30-29.
The fourth quarter was Hillsboro’s best as the team totaled 14 points in the final eight minutes, with Athens scoring just eight points, giving the Indians the sectional win.
In that final frame, Davis scored nine points as he drained a 3-pointer and made five free throws. Nic Burns sank a 3-pointer in the final quarter, while Kibler made three baskets for six points. Mason Dumpert sank a two-point basket, Deegan Bloomfield scored three points in the fourth quarter and Parsons made a free throw.
Davis led the Indians with 16 points, making two two-point baskets, two 3-pointers and he was 6-of-12 from the free-throw line. Kibler totaled 15 points in the tournament win, with six two-point field goals, and he was 3-of-6 in his free throw attempts.
Other final scoring totals for the Indians included Stewart with eight points, Parsons with seven points, Bloomfield (three points), Burns (three points) and Dumpert (two points).
As a team, the Indians had 17 two-point baskets, three 3-pointers and were 11-of-30 from the free-throw line.
Athens was led by Levi Neal with 10 points.
The Bulldogs totaled nine two-point baskets, three 3-pointers and were 10-of-20 from the free-throw line.
Next for the Indians is a sectional semifinal game on Wednesday, Feb. 22 on the road against conference rival, the Washington Blue Lions at 7 p.m. Washington enters the game as the No. 1 seed.
