Carter ends career at state tournament

COLUMBUS — Hillsboro head coach Nathan Horne said it best following the conclusion of the wrestling career of senior Brandon Carter after he was defeated for the second time at the 76th Annual OHSAA Division II State Wrestling championships by saying Carter was a good representative of the school.
"Brandon was a good senior, a great captain and a great representative of Hillsboro High School," Horne said. "He worked hard on the mats, and he works hard in the classroom. Brandon is a class act all-around."
Carter finishes his senior season at 45-5 overall, with a state tournament mark of 1-2. In his consecutive trips to the state tournament, Carter finishes with a record of 2-4. He became one of just 15 wrestlers in Hillsboro High School history to be at least a two-time state qualifier. His sophomore year, he was a state alternate.
Before the state tournament, Carter spoke about making the state tournament for the second time and the competition he faced at the district level.
"This year, it was harder at 106 than it was last year. I faced kids who got sixth, fifth, fourth and second, and then I got third," Carter said. "I faced most of the tough kids, and I'm just glad to make it out. I worked so hard this year, and it worked out perfectly to plan. The main goal at districts is to just make it out. You want that first seed, but making it out is the main thing."
On Friday, Carter lost in the second consolation round, as he lost by a 14-2 decision to Tariq Wilson of Steubenville, who improved his season mark to 47-7.[[In-content Ad]]
In the three-period match at 106 pounds, Carter trailed 2-0 after the first period, then Wilson, who gave up a point and started the match with both wrestlers standing, gained four points on various maneuvers to take an 8-1 lead at the conclusion of the second period.
As for the third period, Wilson continued to add points, with Carter scoring one last time in the final minute of the match.
Carter ends his high school career with two South Central Ohio League championships, two sectional championships and two third-place finishes in the district tournament.
"We didn't get to place, but Brandon wrestled a good tournament against very good competition," Horne said.
Carter's win came on Thursday evening, as he defeated Cory Marshall of Dover by a 12-6 decision.
In his first match of the state tournament on Thursday, Carter lost his first match of the event by a 16-5 decision against Evan Cheek of Milan Edison, who improved to 52-3.
"His second match on Thursday, Brandon wrestled well and got the win," Horne said. "I can't ask more from a kid. It wasn't the way we wanted to end things, but what matters is how you chase your goals … and Brandon chased his with class, and I'm proud of him."
