ODNR welcomes new cadets to serve and protect in Ohio’s great outdoors

Nine dedicated cadets began their training on Monday, Aug. 4 to become the newest Natural Resources Officers with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Parks and Watercraft.

“Natural Resources Officers are the face of ODNR in our parks and on our waterways,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “These cadets are stepping into a unique role, one that blends law enforcement, public service, and outdoor stewardship. We’re proud to welcome them as they begin this important journey.”

Selected from a competitive pool of 366 applicants, these cadets will undergo a rigorous five-month training program at the Ohio State Highway Patrol Peace Officer Basic Training Academy. Upon successful completion, they will commence specialized field training, focusing on essential skills such as water rescues, ATV operation, boat navigation, and natural resources law.

The cadets will be assigned to specific state park areas upon graduation from the academy on Friday, Jan. 16, 2026. The future Natural Resources Officers and their hometowns are listed below:
