Incoming Ohio adjutant general announces new assistant adjutant general for Army

Brig. Gen. Matthew S. Woodruff, incoming Ohio adjutant general, has selected Col. Jonathan M. Stewart to replace him as the assistant adjutant general for Army, responsible for establishing policies, priorities, and oversight for the readiness of more than 10,000 Soldiers assigned to six major subordinate commands within the Ohio Army National Guard.
Stewart currently works full-time as the director of operations (G3) for the Ohio ARNG and serves as commander of the 147th Regiment (Regional Training Institute) in his traditional Guard member role. As the director of operations, Stewart serves as the principal advisor to the assistant adjutant general for Army for training, operations, and plans. As the commander of the regional training institute, Stewart oversees the Ohio ARNG’s sole training school and is responsible for courses in specific Army career management fields and the Army Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development System, as well as commissioning and warrant officer-producing programs.
During his career, Stewart has served in key staff positions including director of personnel (G1), deputy inspector general, and battalion executive officer. His command assignments include commander, Company C, 1st Battalion, 107th Cavalry Regiment, Stow, Ohio; commander, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1-107th Cavalry Regiment, Stow; commander, Ohio ARNG Recruiting and Retention Battalion, Columbus; commander, 1st Battalion, 145th Armored Regiment, Stow; and rear commander, 174th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, Columbus.
Stewart served on active duty as a military police officer from August 1988 to October 1991 including assignments with the 9th Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington and 558th Military Police Company, Kriegsfeld Army Depot, Germany. In October 1991, he enlisted in the Ohio Army National Guard as a military police officer with the 135th Military Police Company in Brook Park, Ohio until he became a commissioned officer in 1997.
His deployed assignments include commander, Company C, 1-107th Cavalry Regiment, Jalula, Iraq (2004-2005); battalion operations officer (S3), 1-107th Cavalry Regiment, Multinational Force and Observers, Sinai Peninsula, Egypt (2008-2009); and commander, 1-145th Armored Regiment, Kuwait, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates (2019- 2020). He has also been activated in support of domestic operations as a military police officer during the prison riot at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, Lucasville, Ohio (April 1993); operations officer, Hurricane Katrina response, New Orleans (September 2005); and National Guard liaison officer, East Palestine train derailment, East Palestine, Ohio (February 2023).
Stewart holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Cleveland State University and a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.
