American flags from local Veteran’s of Foreign Wars chapters, American Legion posts, and various schools and municipal buildings were honorably burned to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States.

Community reflects on anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001
There will be a Sept. 11, 2001 ninth anniversary commemoration at noon Saturday, Sept. 11 on the Highland County Courthouse lawn.
Shane Montgomery, pastor of the Grace Bible Church in Hillsboro, is the county coordinator, in conjunction with the Awakening America Alliance. The alliance is a "cooperative initiative within the body of Christ to increase awareness of the deep spiritual need in today’s America and to pursue a new Christ awakening in our nation that will impact our world," according its website, www.awakeningamerica.us.
According to Montgomery, approximately 30 Ohio counties are holding observances on Sept. 11. "This is an increase from last year when 26 counties participated," he said. "We would like to see all 88 counties in Ohio participate."
The September 11, 2001 attacks were a series of coordinated suicide attacks by al-Qaeda upon the United States. On that morning, 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners and intentionally crashed two of the airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City.
Hijackers crashed a third airliner into the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., just outside Washington, D.C. The fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanksville in rural Pennsylvania after some of its passengers and flight crew attempted to retake control of the plane, which the hijackers had redirected toward Washington, D.C. There were no survivors from any of the flights.
The death toll of the attacks was 2,996, including the 19 hijackers.
