Scott, Shope, Stegbauer earn OPSWA All-Ohio girls basketball honors

The Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association (OPSWA) Division II and III All-Ohio girls basketball team was released this week, where Lynchburg-Clay junior Peyton Scott and Fairfield senior Grace Shope earned state honors in Division III and Maddy Stegbauer was honored in Division II.
Scott earned OPSWA (formerly The Associated Press) second-team All-Ohio in Division III, Shope was awarded special mention honors in Division III and Stegbauer earned honorable mention honors in Division II.
During 21 regular-season games for the 2017-18 campaign, Scott averaged nearly a double-double with 25.1 points per game and 9.8 rebounds per game, as Scott stands at 5-7.

The point guard for the Lady Mustangs, Scott totaled 521 points during the regular season and shot 49 percent from the field. Scott also shot 27 percent from beyond the arc and 87 percent from the free-throw line. The junior also averaged four steals per game and four assists per game.
Scott’s totals for the 2017-18 season included 572 points, 219 rebounds, 91 assists, 89 steals and 20 blocks. For her career, Scott has scored 1,517 points, as this past season was her second straight year of scoring over 500 points in a season.
“Peyton is one of those special players that you don't see very often. Aside from being a skilled player, she has a competitiveness that goes unmatched,” Lynchburg-Clay head coach Whitney Lewis said. “You will not find a player that wants to win more than her. That competitive edge sets her apart from so many other good players.
“Peyton led us in every statistic this year, from points to assists. At times she had two and three people guarding her. Her basketball IQ allows her to see the floor and find the open man. She is the most efficient player I have ever seen. Peyton has had a phenomenal career, and she is just a junior. I can't want to see the highlights from her senior year.”
This season, Scott was also named media first-team All-District, Coaches District 14 first-team All-District and All-SHAC, including SHAC Player of the Year.
Scott has now been named to the OPSWA (AP) All-Ohio team for the past two seasons.
Fairfield’s Shope also had an impressive and successful season, as the senior became not just the Fairfield girls basketball all-time leading scorer, but the all-time leading scorer for both boys and girls, finishing her career with 1,711 points.
For her senior season, Shope averaged 21.3 ppg with 5.6 rpg and 3.0 assists per game. Shope also had 2.7 steals per game and shot 45.2 percent from the field. Shope finished her season shooting 78.8 percent from the free-throw line and 23-percent in 3-pointer shooting. Shope is a two-time All-Ohio selection by the OPSWA (AP), as she was Div. IV special mention All-Ohio as a junior. This season, Shope was OPSWA All-District first-team, Coaches District-14 All-District first-team and All-SHAC.
During the regular season when Shope became the FHS all-time leading scorer, Fairfield head coach Chad Hamilton said the following:
“Grace is invaluable to our program. Even if she has a less than stellar offensive night, she does all the little things defensively – rebounding, the way she defends,” Hamilton said. “She’s a big part of the reason for this program’s turnaround the last four years. I’m happy for her. She’s put in the work and deserves all the accolades she receives. I couldn’t be more happy.”
In Division II, Stegbauer averaged 10.8 points per game, 5.0 rpg, 3.0 apg and 2.0 steals per game as the leading scorer for the Lady Tigers. This postseason, Stegbauer was All-FAC (Frontier Athletic Conference), Coaches District-14 All-District second-team and OPSWA All-District second-team.
“I’m very happy for Maddy,” McClain head coach Jarrod Haines said. “She’s worked extremely hard, and I couldn’t think of anyone who is more deserving.”
