Lions win sectional title

The Fairfield Lions gained a boys soccer sectional championship Wednesday evening at their home field as they defeated the Northwest Mohawks, 1-0.

This was the Lions' second consecutive sectional title.

Fairfield's lone goal came from Ryan Bates with 21 minutes remaining in the first half. The assist went to Blake Hildebrant.

"We played a little flat and missed some opportunities in the first half," FHS coach Brian Ortlieb said. "Our defense stepped up in the second half to secure the win.

"I'm proud of the way the boys played and competed in the second half."

At goal for the Lions, Joey Wilson totaled eight saves in the shutout win.

FHS stands at 10-6-1 overall. Northwest had six wins on the year as they were 1-1 in the postseason, defeating West Union on Monday.

The Lions, a No. 3 seed in their bracket, will next play on Monday, Oct. 22 as they will travel to face No. 2 seed Valley (Lucasville) at 5 p.m. Valley defeated Portsmouth West 4-2 on Wednesday.
