Lions fall to MT Panthers for non-conference loss

Both the Miami Trace Panthers and Fairfield Lions were coming off Friday night wins entering their Saturday night matchup. The second and third frames proved to be the ultimate difference in the non-conference meeting, as the Panthers topped the host Lions 82-75 at Grandle Gymnasium.
Leading all scorers was Fairfield's Ryan Bates as he totaled 25 points and six rebounds in the loss. The weekend was good for Bates as Friday he scored 20 points … and his offensive production hasn't went unnoticed by Fairfield head coach Everett Snyder.
[[In-content Ad]]"Ryan is doing what I've asked of him," Snyder said. "He's doing a good job of finding the dish pass, he's finishing and has been playing good, solid offense. I'm pleased with his play the past two games this weekend."
The loss puts the Lions at 2-2 overall. Miami Trace stands at 4-0 on the year.
Following Bates was senior Quentin Williams with 22 points for the Lions in limited action, as he was in foul trouble the first half. He played roughly four minutes in the first two quarters as he had two fouls in the opening frame and one in the second.
Willams added four steals to his totals and made two 3-pointers. The senior was 6-of-7 from the free-throw line.
"We had the same thing happen at East Clinton where Quentin was in foul trouble early," Snyder said. "We had a 14-point lead when Quentin came out of the game on Saturday.
"Quentin is a guy who makes things go for us and we run the floor well with him."
The Lions led by 10 points following the first quarter at 22-12, but a 26-point second by MT (with FHS scoring 12) made it a Panther halftime lead of 38-34.
In the third MT added 21 points to their total score with FHS scoring 16. The fourth saw the Lions outscore the visitors, 25-23.
Gage Montgomery followed in the FHS scoring with nine points (seven rebounds) and Elijah Carmean scored eight, including two 3-pointers. Cody Bennett totaled seven points (one 3-pointer) and rounding out the scoring for the Lions was Blake Hildebrant with four.
For Miami Trace leading with a team-high 23 points was Austin Schoellkopf, followed by Brantlyn Decker with 16. Blake Baldwin, Jaron Burst and Cedric Pettiford each scored 11.
The Lions will play again on Tuesday, Dec. 11 as they host the Fayetteville Rockets in Southern Hills Athletic Conference play.
