Fairfield, Lynchburg-Clay girls soccer battle to scoreless tie

Though neither the Fairfield Lady Lions nor the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs were able to score a goal in 80 minutes of regulation soccer on Wednesday night, the two teams put on a show that resembled a playoff match.
In the Southern Hills Athletic Conference contest held at Fairfield High School, both teams battled tough for possession of the ball in the first 20 minutes of the first half, as neither team could gain the upper hand on the pressure they placed on the opponent.
As the first half continued, the ball bounced off the crossbar of the goal off a shot by LCHS with 17:45 left in the opening half. The battle between the two Highland County rivals continued with both teams putting on pressure, but both keepers – Lynchburg-Clay’s Philemina Toca and Fairfield’s Alayna McIntosh — held strong at the goal, and they made the stops needed to keep the score at 0-0.
Toca of LCHS continued her strong first half with more outstanding play in the second half with big stops at the 34:09 mark, and later at 29:50 making a sliding save to keep the Lady Lions scoreless.
It was Fairfield keeper McIntosh’s turn to make some tough stops as well, as she had a diving stop of her own with 11:15 on the clock, and later another stop at 10:35.
The two teams didn’t let up on their offensive pressure, but the final buzzer sounded with neither team scoring a goal.
For LCHS, they had a total of 12 shots with Raelynn Ruble having five to lead the team. Karlie Tipton totaled three shots, and with two shots each were Jade Massey and Olivia Van Fleet.
Toca totaled six saves at goal for the Lady Mustangs.
For Fairfield, Olivia Bellamy had two shots, as did Cadence Saunders, while Faith Donley totaled one shot with FHS having a team total of five shots in the SHAC match.
McIntosh finished with four saves for the Lady Lions at goal.
Since this game, on Saturday, Oct. 2, LCHS defeated Edgewood, 3-2. That win improved their overall record to 4-2-5 overall and LC’s SHAC record is 1-0-1 this year.
For FHS, since this game they defeated Miami Trace by a 10-0 score, moving their overall record to 6-2-1 overall. FHS is currently 3-1-1 in the SHAC.
