Fairfield Lions win sectional title; move on to district round

It was a tough battle for the Fairfield Lions baseball team in their Division IV SE District Sectional Final game, but once the final out was recorded, it was the Lions defending the visiting Clay Panthers, 6-3 to move on to the district round of the postseason.
Fairfield, a No. 4 seed, led by a 1-0 score when the first inning concluded, but after the Panthers, a No. 13 seed, scored two runs in the top of the third inning, it was the home team Lions trailing by a 2-1 score.
Fairfield came back with a two-run bottom of the fourth inning, but the game was tied at 3-3 when Clay added a run in the top of the fifth.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Lions broke out for a three-run inning, securing the tournament win and sectional championship.
The Lions ended the postseason game with 12 hits and no errors, while Clay totaled three hits and committed two errors.
Hunter Burns led Fairfield at the plate by finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI. Gabe Fouch went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Both of Fouch’s hits were doubles.
Wyatt Collins was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Dow Moon went 1-for-3 with one run and a walk, while teammate Cade Miller was 1-for-3 with a walk.
Noah Allering finished 1-for-4 with one run scored, and Landry Hattan was 1-for-4 with one run. Owen Larrick ended his day at 1-for-3.
Fouch, who was the winning pitcher, threw five innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits and one walk. Fouch finished with 12 strikeouts. He threw a total of 105 pitches.
Jacob Morgan threw two innings in the start, allowing no runs or hits, and struck out three batters on 30 pitches.
Next for Fairfield is a Division IV district semifinal game on Saturday, May 21 at VA Memorial Stadium as they will face No. 5 seeded Ironton St. Joseph at 10 a.m. in Chillicothe.
