Fairfield Lions run-rule way to district finals

From start to finish, the No. 4 seeded Fairfield Lions scored no less than one run per inning, as their Division IV SE District Semifinal game saw them run-rule No. 5 seeded Ironton St. Joseph by an 11-1 score in five strong innings of baseball at VA Memorial Stadium Saturday morning in Chillicothe.
The Lions improved to 17-4 overall with the victory for the ’22 season, and they wasted little time in showing they were going to advance to the Division IV SE District Finals, beginning by scoring two runs in the first inning, followed by a five-run second inning for a 7-0 lead.
Those two innings were just the start for the Lions as they added one run in the bottom of the third and two runs in the bottom of the fourth, then they capped off the game with one final run in the fifth inning.
Fairfield not only ended the game with 11 runs, but they collected 11 hits and played errorless baseball. Ironton St. Joseph totaled three hits and had one error. They scored their lone run in the top of the third inning.
Hunter Burns of Fairfield led the Lions at 3-for-4 (a double) with one run and two RBI. Three Fairfield players totaled two hits each, with Dow Moon going 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBI and a walk. Gabe Fouch finished 2-for-4 (a triple) with two runs and two RBI.
Landry Hattan was 2-for-3 with one run, while Jacob Morgan finished 1-for-3 with a run and RBI. Cade Miller ended his day at the plate at 1-for-3 with one RBI and a walk.
Also for the Lions, Brandon Ludwick scored a run, and Wyatt Collins forced a walk. Owen Larrick was hit by a pitch. Moon, Larrick and Fouch each had a stolen base.
Morgan was the winning pitcher for Fairfield, pitching all five innings. He allowed one earned run on three hits and five walks. Morgan finished with five strikeouts as he totaled 105 pitches with 52 strikes.
Next for Fairfield is a Division IV District Finals game on Monday, May 23 at VA Memorial Stadium, as they will be facing the No. 1 seeded Lucasville Valley Indians at 4 p.m. Valley defeated Racine Southern (No. 9 seed) by a 6-2 score on Saturday.
