The Fairfield Lady Lions are ranked among the best in the state in the third edition of the 2021-22 Associated Press Division III state basketball poll, as they sit at 10th overall in the state.
The Lady Lions – who are coached by Jeremy McGraw – are 12-1 overall this season, and in the Southern Hills Athletic Conference they are 7-1 and second in the Div. I conference standings, trailing only rival Eastern. Speaking of Eastern, the Lady Warriors are ranked seventh in Division III in the third poll of the season.
Fairfield and Eastern (9-0, 14-2) are scheduled to face each other for a second time this season Thursday, Jan. 20 at Eastern High School. EHS won the first meeting between the two teams on Dec. 16 by a 54-42 score at Fairfield.
Thus far in the 2021-22 season, Fairfield has wins against Ripley, Fairland, Fayetteville, Lynchburg-Clay, Piketon, West Union (twice), Washington, Manchester, East Clinton, Huntington and North Adams.
The Lady Lions began the season with eight consecutive victories, with three wins at Grandle Gymnasium, four road wins and a “home” win in Indiana against Fairland at Hoosier Gym, the same court the movie “Hoosiers” was based on. After their lone loss Dec. 16, Fairfield is currently on a four-game winning streak.
Through 13 games this season, Emma Fouch leads Fairfield with 17.4 points per game. Other team leaders in scoring for the Lady Lions so far this season include Madison Bronner, 10.1 ppg.; Braylynn Haines, 9.6 ppg.; Peyton Magee, 9.2 ppg.; Ella Newkirk, 7.5 ppg.; and Faith Donley, 6.8 ppg.
The roster also includes Shaleigh Duncan, Ginny Trent, Hannah Hamilton, Caitlyn Quickle, Kassie Miller, Jobey Hattan, Kelsey Clark and McKinley Cox.
Fairfield’s remaining schedule for the regular season includes: at Eastern (Jan. 20), vs. Williamsburg (Jan. 22), at Southeastern (Jan. 24), vs. Whiteoak (Jan. 26), at Lynchburg-Clay (Jan. 27), vs. Paint Valley (Jan. 29), at North Adams (Feb. 3), at South Point (Feb. 5) and at Peebles (Feb. 7).
