McClain students going out into the village to serve their community on a day in May has become a tradition, and each year their efforts make Greenfield shine even more. It’s known as MHS Day, and this year’s event is set for May 10.
The McClain FFA is coordinating the day’s projects, led by FFA officers Brooke Baldwin and Brenna Wright. FFA is also sponsoring the materials needed for each activity, Baldwin said.
As with previous years, students’ tasks for the day will include trash pickup around town, landscaping around the village, painting, cleaning at the cemetery, cleanup and painting at the parks, washing fire trucks and other various projects in and around Greenfield.
Baldwin said, too, that some special projects this year will include making cards and delivering them to the nursing homes, and also making dog toys for the animal shelter.
The whole high school is involved in the annual day of community service, and most of the teachers and staff join in, too.
On the day of the event, students and staff will get started around 8 a.m. then head back to the school for lunch. Following that, all will be able to participate in some fun activities planned by the student council, which will include a students versus faculty basketball game.
McClain Principal Matt Shelton said previously that everyone is always excited for the annual MHS Day and watching everyone come together each year for these efforts focused on making the community better “is a great feeling.”
Also on May 10 is a hiring event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the courthouse lawn. It’s hosted by the village of Greenfield. In previous years, part of holding this event during MHS Day is to invite the high school students who are out and about that morning to see what careers are available to them right here in Greenfield.
Should there be inclement weather on May 10, MHS Day will be held on May 13.
“I'm happy to say that the students really took initiative, even changing up some of the ways we coordinate MHS Day,” Shelton said. “This is a great group of FFA members that have planned a promising day of giving back to this community.”
