Wildcats lose by one point to Peebles

Playing in a tough road environment at Peebles High School Tuesday night, the Whiteoak Wildcats lost in very close fashion, falling in their Southern Hills Athletic Conference game to the host Peebles Indians by a single point at 51-50. 

The two team were tied at the end of the opening quarter, as their eight-minute first-quarter battle saw each team score 14 points. 

The second frame was mostly Peebles, as the host team outscored the Wildcats 15-8 in the second for a halftime lead over the visiting Wildcats, 29-22. 

Peebles won the third frame — and added two more points to their overall lead — with a 13-11 quarter and a lead of 42-33. 

Whiteoak had a valiant effort in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Indians 17-9, but coming up one point short of tying the score. 

Three Wildcat players scored in double figures, and leading the scoring effort was Zander Roades with 15 points, followed by Sawyer Blair with 13 points and Weston Blair with 10 points. 

Roades made three 3-pointers and three two-point baskets, and he also added two rebounds and two assists. 

Sawyer Blair finished with one 3-pointer and five two-point baskets for his 13-point total. He also added four rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block. 

Weston Blair’s 10 points came from five two-point baskets, and he also had a double-double with 13 rebounds, plus he tallied three assists, one steal and one block. 

Brady Brandenburg finished with eight points, as he made two two-point buckets and he was 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. Brandenburg also added 10 rebounds, one assist and one steal. 

Zach Igo and Tyler Wessner each scored two points for Whiteoak. 

As a team, the Wildcats totaled 33 rebounds, nine assists, seven steals and two blocks, plus they committed 16 turnovers. 

Peebles was led by Carson Reed with 19 points and Gage Grooms with 10 points. 

After the game, the Wildcats were 5-5 in the SHAC Division II standings and 5-11 overall.
