Tigers earn win against East Clinton

Tuesday night at East Clinton High School had a battle of two former South Central Ohio League rivals in a non-conference showdown, as the McClain Tigers defeated the host East Clinton Astros, 46-43. 

The win by the Tigers improves them to 3-11 overall, as they sit at 0-7 in the Frontier Athletic Conference. 

McClain trailed by two points when the first quarter came to a close at 9-7, and they were outscored 13-12 in the second quarter, for a halftime score of 22-19 in favor of the host Astros. 

ECHS scored 11 points in the third, while McClain added 10 points. The fourth frame is where McClain earned the win, as they added 17 points to their side of the scoreboard, while they held ECHS to 10 points in the final eight minutes, leaving Clinton County with the win. 

For McClain, they were led in scoring by Andrew Potts with 13 points, followed by Owen Sykes with nine points and Jordan Bell with nine points. 

Also reaching the scoring column for MHS in the win were Seth Weller with seven points, Michael Noszka Jr. with six points, and Jayden Allison scoring two points. 

Next for the Tigers is a FAC game on Friday, Jan. 19 at home against the Chillicothe Cavaliers (1-6, 5-8).

Whiteoak suffers road loss at North Adams 

Playing one of the top teams in the Southern Hills Athletic Conference on Tuesday night, the Whiteoak Wildcats were unable to leave Adams County with a conference victory, as they lost to the host Green Devils, 68-33 at NAHS. 

Whiteoak was held to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters played, as they trailed 23-8 after the first quarter was finished, and following a 15-9 second frame, they trailed 38-17 at halftime. 

The second half saw WHS score six points in the third and 10 points in the fourth quarter. North Adams added 17 points in the third and 13 points in the fourth frame. 

For WHS, they were led in the scoring column by Brady Brandenburg with 10 points, followed by Zander Roades, Sawyer Blair and Weston Blair each scoring five points in the game. 

The Wildcats also had Aiden Crowe score four points, Tyler Wessner with two points and Jackson Tedford score two points. 

For the game, the Wildcats were led in rebounds by Weston Blair with nine. Roades led the way with four assists, while Roades and Wessner each had one steal for WHS. 

The game saw Whiteoak total 24 rebounds, 10 assists and two steals as a team, while they finished 3-of-7 from the free-throw line. 

North Adams was led by Bransyn Copas with 21 points. According to Mark Carpenter of the People’s Defender, Copas broke the NAHS career scoring record (formerly held by Copas’ father, head coach Nathan Copas) during the game. For NAHS, they finished 3-of-3 from the free-throw line as a team. 

The loss sends WHS to an overall record of 4-8 and a SHAC record of 4-3. North Adams improves to 6-0 in the SHAC and 9-3 overall.
