Most of you have heard the phrase “April showers bring May flowers.” While it’s hard to argue the truth behind that statement, many farmers and gardeners are now asking, “What do May showers bring?” A few obvious answers would be delayed soybean and garden plantings, late hay harvest, and rapidly growing lawns. While the extra rain may be frustrating right now, we will be glad to have the moisture later in the growing season.

Food Show June 4
    Everyone is invited to the Highland County Senior Center on Friday, June 4 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. for a “food feast-ival.” The center will be closed for regular activities, and the entire main dining room will be transformed into a “convention center” for these special events. Admission is $3 and entitles you to sample all kinds of delicious dishes from a variety of food companies. There will be everything from appetizers to desserts and of course beverages. Come early, and come hungry.

Rotary Christmas for Needy Kids provides food baskets and Christmas presents to families in need in the Greenfield area. The program is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Greenfield and WVNU-FM and was founded by Johnny Paycheck, a country singer and native of Greenfield. More than $225,000 has been raised to help families have a brighter Christmas. Last year, 400 families received assistance from the program.

The a cappella singing will take place at the Highland County Fairgrounds at no cost. There will be no collections taken up. The first a cappella singing was a big success and enjoyed by more than 120 singers. Song leaders are especially encouraged to attend and welcome to lead any song of their choice.

They braved thunderstorms, floods and tornadoes but, luckily, the beautiful princesses arrived safely in town. On Saturday, May 22, five princesses rolled into Hillsboro in a grand carriage. The royalty included Snow White, Belle, Jasmine, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. Prince Charming somehow got lost along the way, perhaps he refused to stop and ask for directions.

Anyone involved with production agriculture knows that there is always some degree of uncertainty involved with any given crop season. Will we get enough rain to provide satisfactory yields? What is the future for crop prices? How much higher will fuel prices go? Will we face any major insect or disease pressures with this year’s crop? I’m sure you can add many more valid questions to this list.

Cake decorating competition
    The Highland County Senior Center will hold a cake decorating competition on Saturday, June 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Caring. Close to Home” is a fitting tagline for Highland District Hospital. It seems just as fitting for an 11-year volunteer who just chalked up 12,000 volunteer hours. Sudie Ruggles is a volunteer who has been committed to the mission of caring through her service to HDH as a volunteer.
