The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs hosted the Ripley Blue Jays for not only a Southern Hills Athletic Conference game, but it was senior day for LCHS on Saturday, May 10, plus LCHS senior Christian Flowers tossed a no-hitter.
The final result saw the Mustangs defend their home diamond with a 22-0 win in five innings against the visiting Blue Jays.
In the no-hitter by Flowers, he threw five innings and 65 total pitches. Flowers walked one batter, while allowing no runs or hits, and he finished with seven strikeouts. Catching the no-hitter was Elam Faust.
“Christian has worked hard in the last two offseasons and has steadily improved on the mound in command of his pitches,” LC head coach James Flowers said. “He threw the highest percentage of strikes in this game that he had all year. We preach that our pitchers should make something happen in three pitches or less. The game that Christian pitched on Saturday was what we want to see as far as staying ahead in the count and making things happen.”
In his no-hitter, Flowers started the game with a strikeout, followed by a pop up to second base, then another strikeout with the throw to first base. In the second inning, Flowers had a pop-up out, a ground ball out hit to third base, a walk, then another groundout, this one also to third base.
Flowers struck out the side in the third on 11 pitches. The fourth inning saw Flowers on the mound force a fly ball out to right field, a groundout back to the pitcher and a fly ball out to left field.
In the fifth and final inning, Flowers hit the first batter he faced, but rebounded with a groundout to first base, a swinging strikeout, and the game ended with another swinging strikeout.
Offensively, LCHS scored nine runs in the bottom of the first inning, then added nine more runs in the bottom of the second for an 18-0 lead. They added two more runs in the third and two final runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In all, Lynchburg-Clay had 13 hits and no errors.
Four Mustang batters had two hits apiece, including Josiah Burns, who was 2-for-3 with a double, three runs, one RBI and a walk. Caden Faust went 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBI and a walk.
