Mustangs win at North Adams; lose weekend tri-DH

The past three games for the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs saw them win a game that was delayed last week at North Adams on Monday night, and this past Saturday, the Mustangs lost a tri-doubleheader at home against Zane Trace and Williamsburg. 

In the continuation of the game against North Adams, the Mustangs defeated their Southern Hills Athletic Conference counterpart by a 4-1 score. 

For the entire game, LCHS scored first with a 1-0 lead at the conclusion of the first inning, and after neither team scored runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, each team scored a run in the sixth inning for a 2-1 Lynchburg-Clay lead. 

LCHS added two more runs to their lead in the top of the seventh to secure the three-run victory. 

The Mustangs finished the game with nine hits and two errors, while NAHS had two hits and one error. 

Josiah Burns finished 2-for-3 in the two-day game, with two runs and one walk. Cole Wells was 2-for-4 with three RBI, and also collecting two hits was Cody Bell at 2-for-3 with one RBI, as the trio combined for six of the nine hits by the Mustangs. 

Braedon West finished 1-for-3 with one run and one walk. Austin Bell finished 1-for-3 with a run scored. Asher Faust ended the game at 1-for-2. 

Also for the Mustangs, Cody Bell and Burns each had two steals, while collecting one steal each were Wells and Austin Bell. 

Wells pitched one inning for LCHS, allowing no runs, hits or walks, while striking out three batters. Wells finished with 18 pitches, 12 for strikes. 

Christian Flowers was the winning pitcher, as he was on the mound for six innings, allowing one earned run on two hits and four walks, all while striking out five batters. Flowers threw 79 pitches, 46 for strikes. 

The win leaves LCHS at 4-4 overall this season.

In the first game on Saturday (April 6), the Zane Trace Pioneers were too much for the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs to overcome in their first game of their tri-doubleheader, as LCHS lost to the visiting team, 8-1. 

LCHS scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Zane Trace had a two-run first inning, followed with a run in the top of the second, then another run in the third inning. The Pioneers added two runs in the top of the fourth inning and two final runs in the top of the sixth inning. 

In all for LCHS, they had one run, five hits and committed three errors. Zane Trace finished with their eight runs, plus they added seven hits and committed one error. 

Trevor Niehaus ended the game with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Also with hits for the Mustangs were Burns (1-for-3), Cody Bell (1-for-2, one run, one walk) and Elam Faust (1-for-2, one walk). 

Max Baker was hit by a pitch to reach the bases, and collecting steals were Cody Bell and Wells. 

Caden Faust pitched 2.1 innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits and four walks. Isaac Eyre pitched three innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and one walk, with one strikeout. Niehaus went 1.2 innings on the mound, allowing no runs, no hits and no walks.

In game two on Saturday, the Mustangs were defeated by the Williamsburg Wildcats by a 5-4 score at LCHS. 

The non-conference loss saw the Mustangs score one run in the bottom of the fifth and rally for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Williamsburg scored two runs in the top of the third, followed by a two-run sixth inning, and scored an important final run in the top of the seventh to secure the one-run win. 

LCHS finished the game with three hits and they committed two errors, while Williamsburg had five runs, four hits and committed five errors. 

Wells finished 1-for-2 with two walks. Niehaus was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Baker also had a hit at 1-for-1 for the game. 

Burns walked once for LCHS, and other final stats included Elam Faust scoring a run, Eyre scoring a run and Cody Bell scoring a run plus walking once. 

Jay Cordrey, West and Baker all had steals, and Elam Faust was hit by a pitch. 

Four LCHS players were on the mound against Williamsburg, with West going 3.2 innings allowing two earned runs on two hits and no walks. He totaled five strikeouts. 

Wells threw 1.1 innings, allowing no runs or hits, while he walked two batters and struck out three batters. Flowers pitched 0.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on one hit and one walk. Baker pitched 1.1 innings, as he allowed one earned run on one hit and one walk, with three strikeouts.
