Mustangs baseball dominate West Union

Gaining the run-rule victory on Tuesday (April 30), the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs stayed in contention for the Division I Southern Hills Athletic Conference championship, defeating the West Union Dragons, 12-2 at LCHS. 

The win by the Mustangs leaves them currently in second place in the SHAC Division I standings with a conference mark of 10-2 with one SHAC game remaining. In first place currently is Eastern at 9-1 with three SHAC games left on their schedule. 

LC’s lone SHAC game remaining is at Manchester on May 7, while Eastern has games vs. Whiteoak (May 2), at Peebles (May 4) and at Ripley (May 7) left on their schedule. 

On Tuesday, the Mustangs (10-2, 12-7) scored two runs in both the bottom of the first and second innings for a 4-0 lead, and after outscoring the Dragons 6-1 in the fourth inning, LCHS increased their lead to 10-1. 

WUHS scored a run in the top of the fifth, while Lynchburg-Clay added two runs in the bottom of the fifth to complete the run-rule win. 

LCHS totaled 10 hits and had one error, while West Union had three hits and three errors. 

The Mustangs had Micah Hall finish 1-for-2 with one run, while Josiah Burns went 1-for-2 with a triple, two runs and one walk. 

Cole Wells ended the day at 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Trevor Niehaus was 2-for-4 with one run and three RBI. 

The Mustangs also had Braedon West go a perfect 3-for-3 with one run and two RBI, while Cody Bell finished 1-for-2 with one run and two RBI. 

LCHS saw Isaac Eyre score one run and walk once, while Austin Bell collected a run and a walk. Asher Faust finished the SHAC win with a run, one RBI and two walks. 

Steals for the Mustangs included Bell (three), Wells, West, Burns and Asher Faust. Being hit by a pitch were Cody Bell, Wells, Burns and Austin Bell. 

Christian Flowers pitched 3.1 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and four walks, with one strikeout. Eyre went 1.2 innings on the mound, allowing one run (none earned) on two walks and no hits with two strikeouts.
